My wife, class of '07, and I are moving to San Antonio. Probably moving to the NW side of town near Helotes, Fair Oaks Ranch, Boerne.

She is an elementary school teacher and has taught grades (1st, 2nd, and 4th). She has 6 years experience and has numerous certifications (ESL, GT, etc.). This week she noticed 4 positions at Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary school within Boerne ISD. She will be applying to these positions. Anyone work at Fair Oaks ES, with Boerne ISD, or have any inside information about the positions (aside from the online posting)?

If not Boerne ISD, does anyone know of anything opening up in Northside ISD or a private school in the area?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thread cross posted in the job network forum too.

NISD is always looking to hire teachers as the District is growing at an exponential pace. I have done IT work for them in the past. Great place to work.

I've worked in NISD for the high school in Helotes for several years, and I love it. The elementary schools in that area are fantastic, too: Kountz, Helotes, Kruger, Beard, Ward, Braun Station are all highly recommended.

Let me know if you have anything I can help you with.

Bon

This is a shot in the dark since your wife teaches high school, but would she happen to know of any open positions for fall for elementary school teachers in the area? My wife is planning on applying to NISD, but she is assuming she'll go into an application pool. For her last two positions, she got her foot in the door by directly emailing the principal, which lead to an interview and subsequent job offer. She is hoping to find out of openings at specific schools so she can send a personal email. Thanks again for your help!

Since I'm at the high school, I don't have any connections at the elementary level, but I do know that this side of the district is rapidly expanding. You can go to nisd.net and use the "School Selector" tab to find the necessary info about the principal and whatnot. In addition to schools above, look into Nichols, Braucle, Carson, Stubing, and Wanke.
If I could figure out how to message you, I'd give you my contact info, but I'm an Old who usually only stalks the boards for laughs, so I haven't figured that out yet!
Let me know if there's anything else I can do. I've been teaching for 20 years in 5 different districts, and Northside - even with its massive size - has been my favorite to teach in.

I see you've ruled out living in Alamo Ranch; a wise choice.

My wife is an elementary teacher in Northside. Unfortunately she is not aware of openings, as are most teachers at this time. The transfer lists came out in the last week for teachers to transfer between schools in the district, and are open for several more weeks.

Bon is absolutely right that Northside is a great district to work in/for. It's a double-edged sword, because once teachers get in, most don't leave until retirement, giving few the chance to get their foot in the door. However, there is massive growth in your area, and the district opens approximately three new schools a year. You are probably aware of this since your wife is a teacher, but the most in-demand teachers are those willing and/or able to teach math or science, and fluently speak Spanish.

Anecdotally, my wife and I moved to San Antonio mid-way through the school year (years ago), and she got desperate enough to interview at charter schools and public "academies" in the area (even working for one for one day just before the next school year started, only to quit the next day after being told her unreasonable responsibilities on the first day). Your wife needs to avoid these "schools" like the plague.

My wife kept looking, and was offered a teaching position in Northside the week before classes began due to unexpected enrollment at the school at the time. I can say with some certainty that this still happens in the district due to the steady influx of families to the area throughout the year.

If I hear of anything, I'll try to post on here. Best of luck to her.

Talking with my wife right now. She says your wife needs to apply through the district website, and hand deliver resumes to the schools (someone in the office) as soon as possible. She says hand-delivered is better, because otherwise the principals just type in keywords in the system to find teachers that way.

Thanks humorous. Yes, we decided against Alamo Ranch. Hopefully going to stick to the fair oaks, Helotes, or Shavano park area depending on where my wife works. My wife is planning to apply to the district tonight, but hand delivering resumes will be difficult. We won't be moving to the area until August and when we come to visit it'll be on the weekends. I'll have her email the principals, though. She's similar to your wife in that for her previous two jobs she got hired after the first week of school when schools schools realized they needed to hire again.

welcome to the area! I have a son at FORES but no professional connections to the district. The principal at Kendall is an Aggie, btw.

You might try Aggies Only, lots of Boerne people there.

The wife says that principal's e-mails are listed on the individual school websites (available through the NISD site). She says to e-mail only the principal.

There are job fairs around the time school gets out in June (usually the first week after school is out). It would be very beneficial for your wife to attend. She should receive an e-mail about it after she applies.

We live in the Sonoma ranch area off Kyle Seale. Good neighborhoods and good schools in this area...

My wife also teaches elementary school for Northside. There are some good schools, but also some very bad schools in the district. She has taught for 14 years and nearly decided to get out of teaching due to the school she taught at last year. The administration was horrible at the school and there were incredible amounts of turnover each year (like at least 1/4 to 1/3 the teaching staff). Having said that, she absolutely loves the school she is teaching at now. Our kids will be going to a new school opening across from the dominion (think the name is Ellison). Leon springs and Aue would be great schools to get into if there is opening. The new school is relieving overcrowding at those schools so it may be unlikely to find something open till right before school starts when the principals know actual enrollment numbers. Have your wife try to get in touch with the principal at the new school.

Thanks for all the help! Ted, would you sharing the bad schools to work for?

My wife ended up applying to NISD, NEISD, and Boerne. Some of them have specific jobs open that she applied for. Hopefully she'll get a few bites soon.

That depends on your definition of "bad".

Northside ISD extends from just inside Loop 410, to well outside Loop 1604. In general, the closer you get to Loop 410, the worse the school is. Once you get halfway between Loop 1604 and Loop 410, the "bad" schools start to show up.

I agree with the guy above me. Once you get inside 1604, some of the schools get questionable. But, don't let that be the only indicator of the quality of the school. The administration was the problem at the previous school my wife worked at, so it wasn't just the demographics of the school that were the issue.

I think anything along the helotes to I-10 area are safe bets but those positions are also in high demand. Your wife may just take a position anywhere within the district that is offered just to get in and then worry about transferring a year or two later if that isn't the school she is looking for. Remember, there are a ton of teachers applying each year for these same spots your wife wants. Her job is not as a teacher right now. It's "sales". She needs to sell herself as the best candidate for the position over the hundred other resumes the principal is looking at. Do something to stand out and get the principals attention. First impressions go a very long way, and meeting someone face to face will help her be remembered more than a piece of paper. Have her put together a portfolio of everything she has done in her previous classrooms with pictures if she has them, and personally hand it to the principal.

My wife works in Northside and absolutely loves it. I'm pretty sure they are hiring like mad. I would do the district application thing then send out some emails to principals.

If you can get in, it's awesome.

Thanks for asking humorous. She was fortunate and got a teaching position this week with Boerne ISD! She's excited! Now the fun stuff starts, house hunting. Probably along the I10 corridor in the Leon Springs/Aue/Fair Oaks Ranch school zones.

All the important school personel (principals, deans, some dept heads) are on campus doing summer school, making schedules, interviewing, etc. Go by in person and see who you can meet. Try and get further than the secretary. I would say I'm dropping off a resume for job application. If you can't get by the secretary, come back another day. At lunch. To shake hands and drop off in person is the way to go. Don't be pushy, they are busy busy busy. But a quick intro and resume is a good idea at the schools you are interested in.

Thanks all!

MROD, good luck to your daughter. Hope she finds a position. I agree with PFG. Getting herself out there is the best bet. If she is unable to find a position right now, tell her not to fret. Schools will be hiring the first week of school when they get their enrollment figures. That is how my wife got her first 2 teaching positions. This isthe first time she found a position before school started.

Most teachers had until the middle of July to decide if they wanted to get out of their contract. Since my wife began teaching, we have seen at least one teacher my wife worked with quit every year in the middle of the summer. It usually ends up being because they want to stay home with their child(ren).

Best of luck to those looking for a position.

She really likes it. She's in her second year. Her school and the district are much different from her previous schools (in a good way). We are glad we moved out here. Hoping we stay here for a while! Thanks for asking!
