I'm currently looking at a career change and am interested in the SAPD. Any insight from current officers or so forth would be appreciated

I have a good friend who has been with SAPD for a few years (at least since 2008). If there are any specific questions, feel free to post and I can pass them on for a response.

Thanks im really looking for info on how their application process goes. I already see that if I turned one in today I would not make it for the class that is coming up.

I had a friend that was on the went through the SAPD process when we started the police academy at San Antonio college. We finished the 9 month academy and he was still waiting. Also depending on your age, which i think is over 36 years, you don't qualify for the SAPD retirement package and have to go with TMRS, which is more like a 401K plan.

They are very strict on there drug use, pretty much get disqualified for life. Pretty much the only drug that could have used in the past was Marijuana. When I was in the academy, our instructor who was a retired SAPD Captain, told us that they disqualifed a female who was drugged at a bar.

Hmm I'm 25 now I'm really just wondering what they are looking for in the application process before you ever even get selected for a class.

Brother is starting the academy in a few days.

Don't remember all the steps in detail, or the order, but know you have to do at least the following:

1) Typical job application
2) Pass physical
3) Pass a fitness test (like an obstacle course).
4) Interview with detective/higher up.
5) Friends/family must fill out a form documenting your character/drug use history/arrest history/etc.
6) Pass a lie detector
7) Pass a psych evaluation.

If you have any questions you can PM me. My father was an officer/detective for SAPD for over 20 years and my brother just dealt with the application process.

It's been a while but I was helping a kid out at church.
IF I recall he had to go through AACOGS first. (https://www.aacog.com)
SA didn't offer any scholarships at the time, NBPD did but was very selective.
The kid ended up going into the Border Patrol but that's about all I can remember.
