...right now? I know Labor/Memorial Day gets crazy. Is there any areas suitable for a family weekend trip?

Haven't done the Guadalupe in awhile, but floating from Landa Falls would be a good choice. Floated on a Saturday and there were plenty of families out on the river.

Awesome thanks for the response. Is it pretty jam packed right now?

Always try to get on as early as possible. College kids/partiers are hard pressed to be on before 11:00 or 12:00.

I'd try to be on by 10:00 at the absolute latest.

Is there any shade along the way?

There is shade every so often from the trees, but more often than not you will have some sun on you. Bring a big hat and loads of sunscreen or you will be burned!

i float fairly frequently. the horseshoe is a party spot.

comal from landa falls isn't bad. you will always have people drinking and you never know what you're going to get. probably the safest bet.

i did "rocky beach" on guadalupe last weekend and it was fine.

Took the family to Garner State Park a couple of weeks ago and it was great. I haven't done the Guadalupe.

+1 on landa falls by 10am. The Comal has a little bit better supervision by the cops. It has been pretty packed on both rivers here lately but if you go early it's actually fairly enjoyable.

Make sure and check the river flow from Canyon Lake first if floating the Guadalupe. We floated earlier this summer when it was I believe 470cfs and it was the most intense float I have ever been on and not suitable for kids. We went through Rocking R and they started us up river at some state park and all three of us went under on the first section of rapids (Waco Falls I believe?} Lost ice chest, sunglasses, bruising, etc. Literally all got back together after that and had the biggest WTF? moment ever... But.. It was FUN!

The water is flowing at a much more normal level right now.

For a family trip, I would recommend floating the Comal River early in the day. People float it multiple times per day so if you're there in the PM, be prepared to see people who have floated it multiple times - drinking the entire time. With that said, it is sometimes funny to see some of those people trying to get out at the last tubers exit.

If you can, float it during the week and not the weekend. I did this with kids once during spring and we were the only people on the river that we saw that day.
