My wife and I want to take the boat out in the next few weekends to a lake within relative close proximity to San Antonio. A few people have recommended Canyon Lake or Medina. We need a place with a public boat ramp. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a good place to go?

I've never been to either but they're both full! Both are said to be beautiful lakes. I hear Medina is really pretty when full so I look forward to checking it out some day. All the "Highland Lakes" (Buchanon, Inks, LBJ, Travis) are full too and aren't too far away.

Have a fun, safe time!

Canyon is still almost 7 feet high but it's dropping over 1/2 ft. per day. Because of the high water only 2 ramps are open and they have been crazy on the weekends. Hopefully they can open a few others by this weekend so things calm down some. The water in Canyon right now is surprisingly clean for the amount of flood runoff it caught.

There are plenty of free public ramps on Canyon operated by Comal County as well as several others in the Corps of Engineers parks.

Canyon is always our first choice since it's a bit easier to get to the southern ramps, but I would try Medina since it's full and who knows how long that will last...

Canyon is a very nice lake. Was out on it last weekend. A couple of the ramps weren't open then but most should be good now.

I keep a boat in the marina at Canyon Lake. It is a beautiful lake but it is insane on weekends. I do not venture to take my boat out on weekends. Too many crazies and most of them drunk. I had several bad incidents with idiots on personal watercraft paying no attention to the bigger faster boats . I just decided that I could not have safe fun on weekends and you will find my boat safely in its' slip on weekends .

Most are still closed as of today. Canyon is still 6 feet above full.

Not sure if the south shore ramp at Choke is open, but if it is, you'll have a lot less traffic there compared to Canyon and Medina. It's a bit longer drive but much less crowded.
