Please recommend a primary care person in the Medical Center area.

Prefer an internist, not GP or FP.

I am 69.

I want someone who will actually conduct a physical examination rather than avoid it at all costs (like my present guy). I also have a complex medical history, so I need someone who will listen to me. I do not like brusque, dismissive doctors.

I don't expect you will know the insurance the person takes, but let me just say I have Humana Medicare.

Thank you!

Have you looked into concierge medicine?

It is expensive (too much so for most people), but unfortunately it is the only way to get "old fashioned" medical care these days. May not be what you need but that popped into my head reading your post.

I'll try to think on it and come up with some suggestions. Unfortunately with the way Medicare pays internal med docs these days it is cost prohibitive for them to address multiple issues on most visits, but not sure about physicals.

I have been seeing Dr John Galan @ Pasteur Medical Associates for the last few years. My previous doctor of almost 20 years started a concierge service so he recommended Galan to his patients that didn't want to follow him. I've seen him for my physicals and he seems very thorough. I'm in my mid 30's though so my needs aren't necessary the same as your might be but I have liked him. He won't sugar coat anything and tells it like it is.

If you end up going to concierge route as the other poster mentioned, see Dr William Atlas. It would be worth the drive to Stone Oak. I believe it's $1800 per year though.

I have not been very clear.

I am not talking about having a physical done. I mean that when I go to see the doctor for what seems to be a sinus infection or the flu, for instance, I expect him to actually look down my throat, check my eardrums, feel my lymph nodes, etc.

If I am having abdominal pain, I would like him to actually palpate my abdomen.

I do not need many issues addressed at once. Again, I was unclear.

Galan is the only Dr I have seen in the Medical Center area. I live in stone oak and work downtown so I have only seen him for physicals and just go to urgent care or a specialist if something else is going on. I would think that he would be just as thorough with other types of visits but I can't tell you from experience.

Atlas is the best out there in my opinion so I wasn't happy he went the concierge route. Apparently he never had time for his family so I can't blame him for his decision. I've contemplated paying the extra but at my age, it would just be a waste.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Hope you find someone you like.

Thank you for responding! Dr. Galan is not on Humana, unfortunately.

Ambur Brown at Wellmed. 410/Ingram. She was my PCP before she went to Wellmed and they only do Medicare. I highly recommend her.
On step 12 of 22 step BAS Anonymous program. Please donate, the struggle is real.

Tim Hernandez is excellent but he's in stone oak now.

Dr. Mitchell Finnie and Dr. Mary Beth Harr are both very good and in the med center area. I believe they are family practice, though.

Martin Wiesenthal is excellent but wouldn't be surprised if he isn't accepting new patients.

OP, this is my observation, but I really don't see much practical difference between an experienced family practice doctor and an experienced internist these days. Internal med docs used to treat/manage almost everything for their patients, but die to reimbursements they pretty much jave to refer most things out to specialists.

You have a point. I already have specialists for a number of issues I have and I see those doctors about those issues without referrals.

But when something new pops up, I would like someone pretty knowledgeable to be able to recognize something serious.

We go to Drs Scott and Amy Thomas at Alamo Family Practice in the Med Center. I'm pretty certain they take Humana.

They are at Christus Santa Rosa off Babcock

Great recommendation.

I also recommend Dr Manual Rodriguez or Carlos Roldan at Macgregor Medical. I'm a pharma rep and have called on the area for 15 years. Manny Rodriguez is my personal physician. I love Macgregor because they have everything in house so labs, x-rays, etc. are all done without having to make additional stops.
