I dont follow SA news, and never go there. but this was my experience this weekend.

we went for a baseball tournament. Stayed at the Hampton inn on the southwest side of town by the Main Event. Not the nicest hotel but it was fine, $200 a night. had to stay somewhere decently priced because the whole team had to be able to afford it.

first day we are there we are all at Main Event. its noon. one of my players dads gets his window bashed in and all of his stuff stolen.

then, it happens to another parent at the hotel. when they tell the hotel about it, the response was essentially "yep...it happens almost every day, its part of the experience. good luck!"

sure enough there were two more of these instances in the next two days at the hotel and 3 more attempts. I am not kidding.

when it happened to the last of my players families, they switched to some hotel downtown. Not sure which one but it was nice.

they did valet and the valet service stole the kids baseball gear out of the vehicle. When they complained to the hotel the response was "yep...its been happening. Trying to find out which valet employee is doing this. sorry"

The entire experience was unreal.

it was all Ford Trucks that it happened too. no idea why. The hotel staff told us that if we didnt have a Ford Truck we would be fine and sure enough they were right.

Shouldn't have stayed on the Southwest side, that's one of the worst areas of town.

SA has been infested with the gang crime for 10+ years. Never leave anything in your car. Ford's are notoriously easy to punch in the locks with a screw driver.

Anything south of northern part of the 410 loop is a no-go. Aside from alamo heights and a handful of other areas, stay on the north side regardless of where you need to be in SA. Maybe far west side near alamo ranch is another option that could work.

Fords are like a dirt bag magnet around here. My buddy's got hit twice in the same Home Depot parking lot and he was inside for all of 10 minutes each time.

Obi will tell you he leaves his unlocked so they don't smash anything, hopefully they check the door before they punch it out or smash a window. Hell, even security in parking lots doesn't deter them, they are in and out too quick.

TFOS is correct. I don't bother locking my doors anymore and just hope that they try the handle before breaking a window or cracking the lock.

It sucks not being able to leave **** in my truck now and again for convenience, but no amount of security will ever be enough.

Hoovas on the south side. Anyway the quarry will get you a broken window as well. And that's pretty much mule territory.

Trucks are a hot item for break ins in this city. I feel like the area you stayed at and hwy 151 hotels are a hot spot since they know people are probably visiting Sea World. It sucks that the hotels know about it but won't do anything.

They pull into a spot between two pickups, punch out the locks/window, take whatever is in sight, and jump back on the highway. The whole operation takes seconds. The highest risk spots are right by the highway and the edge of the densest parking where it's basically a pickup in every other parking spot. That's where they can hit two expensive vehicles without circling the parking lot and with low risk of getting obstructed on the way out.

I take my stuff inside everywhere and try to pick parking spots where the thieves' risk/reward is worse relative to other spots in the same parking lot. I also don't go many places where it's common.

The I-10 corridor says hi. Dezavala out towards Boerne, with bonus points at The Rim.

At my old office building a coworker was on the phone and staring out the window. He saw a car park next to a new F250. Dude hops out, punches the lock, and gets in and out of the truck before coworker could get off the phone.

When I drive to SA in my Ford, I assume my truck is getting broken into.

With no rain in forecast, I legit leave windows down. Doors open. Maybe a diaper on the center console. Nothing of consequence in the truck.

SA and Fords. A match made in heaven.

It happens to us when we go to Houston for baseball tournaments, why wouldn't it happen to you guys when you come here to play?

Hint: Regardless of whether it's Houston or San Antonio, it happens most often to trucks that look like they may have guns in them.

If it's so easy to set up the bait, you'd think this would be a great opportunity for SAPD to run some sting operations. Get new Ford, leave some stuff on the seats, and be ready to grab the dirtbags.

Obi's diapers are too big for the console.

Now that you've experienced it you're officially a San Antonian. Bienvenidos!

Sorry this happened to you. Hotels and shopping centers near the interstate are prime targets. SAPD doesn't do a thing about it because it happens to often.

Article on 2017 stats: Bexar County ranks third in the state for burglaries from motor vehicles with over 25,000 in 2017. Total losses from those break-ins are estimated at nearly $29 million. The county is also third in motor vehicle thefts with close to 8,000. Total losses amounted to $112 million.

Many years ago. Jeep stolen from North Star mall. Excuse to get new GMC truck. Two weeks later that was stolen from the movie theater on 10 and Callaghan, middle of afternoon. 2 vehicles in 2 weeks

Be honest, did you leave the key in the vehicle either/both times?

Had a coworker who refused to carry his car key around so he would leave it in the vehicle. Two stolen vehicles in a year. Complained to no end about thieves. I finally had to tell him what an idiot he was for leaving the keys readily available.

SAPD doesn't give sh!@. Had my truck stolen a while back, was able to recover it and the police put zero effort into arresting the perp even though they knew who it was.

The SW side of town is rough. Buddy of mine runs a body shop on that side of town and he gets recovered stolen vehicles all of the time. They are almost always Ford trucks and they are gutted. Cartels pay good money for trucks and Ford is their preferred make.

About a month ago he received a wrecked truck on a Friday night. He just happened to be up at his office doing paperwork on Saturday morning and the office phone was blowing up. The guy calling told him he didn't need the vehicle but needed to get in it ASAP. He had a envelope with $80K cash in the truck and needed it fast.

5 years ago my friend and his wife called me at 10 PM and said his new Ford pickup was stolen in a parking garage downtown San Antonio. I drove from Kyle to SA and he said the cops just filed a report. 4 years later SA police called and said they found his truck chopped up and left in an area in Laredo. Asked if he wanted his truck. Yea. No.

My cousin had his truck stolen at the SA Airport. Airport PD quizzed him down with a bunch of questions (Do you have a girlfriend angry with you? Do you associate with any drug dealers?) acting like he might have known the person that stole it. Several months later he got a call from SAPD asking if he found his truck. My cousin asked, "Aren't you guys supposed to be looking for it?"

"Well, sometimes people call in stolen vehicles and then find them later and never report them recovered "

SAPD - To protect and serve, indeed.
