Own a convertible.
Ride around.
Lots of cars have people already smoking pot.
I would wager SA has mas pot smokers than Austin.

  • Decriminalize marijuana - Good idea
  • End enforcement of abortion laws - Doubt this petition will do anything in practice.
  • Ban No-Knock Warrants and Chokeholds - Already banned
  • Expand Cite and Release - Also seems like a good idea, at least from a high level

There will always be those incidents where someone was improperly labeled as low risk that murder an innocent civilian. One is too many.

You can't arrest somebody for something they haven't done yet

I'm talking about those cases where they cite someone that would have normally been arrested smart ass.

I was a cop for two years and saw people who you would call low risk wind up committing serious felonies. Now if we're talking a simple thing like marijuana, depending on the amount I can see that.

Again that's detaining somebody on hunch

No. It's citing them, issuing a ticket, instead of taking them to jail.

To be clearer, I have less problem with low level (not for distribution) marijuana possession than theft. Theft is often the gateway to serious felonies. In cases of theft, I think there should be a reality check, like a tough love program for these offenders but it should include a mentor that continues to work with the offender to set them on a better path. If we don't break the cycle nothing changes. The liberal fix is "we need more money" but the problem, is a culture problem and until you change that, nothing will change. The only way to change the culture is for people to get involved with the offender and with the environment that is creating this destructive culture. Most of these offenders never had a father. Denzel Washington talks a lot about the culture problem, the lack of fathers. HIs three best friends didn't have a father and all did extensive stints in prison.
Sorry to have jumped on my soapbox, I've done a lot of work in inner cities through United Way, Big Brothers and have seen first hand the struggles in these communities that have no direction, no culture and it is heart wrenching.

I think Reload is talking about situations where, historically, someone would've been arrested and actually detained- like theft of property under $1000 but more than a few $$- but under new program they'd be cited and released. His experience is thieves have a higher rate of criminal recidivism and escalation- steal $500 today, stab someone next week.

Correct. Not quite as fast as just a week but there is a definite ramp up. Kind of like most serial killers started with torturing frogs, etc.
