Our kids are 5 & 6 years old. I've been down the river a few times but we've never really taken the kids before. Is there a relatively calm spot that's shallow enough that doesn't involve renting a camping space? We just want to go up for a few hours.

There is an area below the chute shallow enough for kids and for walking around, though recent rains may have caused the flow to pick up a bit.

If you go on the weekend, I recommend going early. In the afternoon and later in the day, there will be lots of drunk folks and drunken antics and attitudes as the water is shallow enough to stand around and drink. Not a good place for kiddos to be with all that crap going on.

If you go during the week, shouldn't be a problem, though I would still lean toward earlier in the day rather than later.

Will be on the river this Saturday very near the shallows. Will reply to this thread with current river conditions.

Guadalupe in Sattler near Whitewater Ampitheater. Easy float and public access. Not nearly as crowded as Comal or Gruene, but can be a bit busy mid-day on the weekend.

This is also where everyone who paid for access at The Float-In stands around to drink and vape/smoke pot.

Its not kid friendly.

Its wonderful people watching and a great place to catch a second hand high, but I wouldn't bring my kids....

This is good advice but I would say go early no matter what to avoid the rowdies. I would definitely try to go during the week and start by 9:00am.

+1 for River Acres park. Get there early to get parking and avoid the insane afternoon crowds. We live close by and can confirm it's a shallow area without a terrible current right now.

To update, was at the Float Inn yesterday, which is between the chute and the shallow area on the Comal. Arrived just after 11am, left around 5pm.

Wasn't bad, but will reiterate that if taking kids, go early and leave early. Didn't see anything crazy yesterday, but plenty of folks drinking and some second hand weed smoke, so not a good place for kids from late morning onward. Granted it was Saturday, so if you can go during the week in order to avoid the weekend traffic could be more family friendly.

I agree moreso with posts above about putting in on the Guadalupe there in NB. Didn't check it yesterday so don't how it's looking right now, but would expect water level to be fine, and more likely better with kids.

OP, when do y'all plan to visit?

Now that its officially summer, the float in looks like that every day of the week.
