Saw a black squirrel today in San Antonio. I watched him for a while, then saw he had a den under a concrete slab. First one I've ever seen.

Per Google, the black squirrel is one in 10,000 relative to the brown squirrel. I mentioned it to someone though today, and she told me that she sees Black Squirrels all the time in Castle Hills. Said they never go up in the trees, which I thought was really odd. But come to think of it, the black squirrel I saw didn't go up in the tree either, he ran around and then went into his hole.

Yep, you saw a rock squirrel. Common in the hill country so seeing one in SA, particularly on the north/northwest side of town, is about right.

As their name implies, they frequent rocky areas (cliffs, boulder piles, rock fences, etc.).

Will see them all over prominent limestone areas. Very common.

I recall seeing a few on FM 3009 just south of I35 so they're out there. Not to derail (but I'm gonna) I did see a gray fox at Pereida and South Alamo downtown last week not long before sunrise. With the river right there, it shouldn't be surprising, but it was a "huh, look at that" moment.

Yeah, there's a whole family of grey foxes in King William these days. Along with a solo coyote.
Those foxes are pretty cool to watch.

I see gray foxes on my security cameras probably at least once every two weeks or so. I'm in Castle Hills. When I lived in Hollywood Park, I saw them pretty often.

Usually after dark, I've only seen them a couple of times in the daytime.

About 20 years ago, a real estate broker told me a red fox lived at an undeveloped site near Blanco and 1604. Personally, I've never seen one.

Lots of Rock Squirrels around the office, they are territorial and kill the grey squirrels. They're bigger, probably 1 1/3 the size.

Also lots of Grey Foxes too, have had a family around the house for +10 years. They are usually out after dark, but I see them during the day occasionally, especially in the summer. I don't think they have enough time to hunt for the family with short nights. I've also seen them out in the summer with the kits during the day. They are fine with people, if they get used to seeing you they will get fairly close to you. If you know what they sound like its pretty easy to figure out if they are around.

I've only seen one Red Fox, it was off 360 in Austin, was in my early 20's doing some late night 4 wheeling, it wasn't alive. No way you would ever mistake it for a Grey Fox, much bigger and red, not just a couple of spots that are red.
