The diary did reach home. But Sonny never did. Sonny was killed by a mortar round during the Battle of the Buldge in Noville, Belgium on 12.20.1944.

His name, CPL Ollie Barrington, Jr., will be listed in the Ravenville Memorial commemorating the initial attacks on Ravenoville village/Marmion Farm on D-Day & their subsequent defence until reinforced by infantry from Utah Beach on D+1.

UPDATE January 2014

The 70th Anniversary of D-Day approaches. On June 5, there will me a Memorial Ceremony in Ravenoville, France where Sonny fought on D-Day. They will be unveiling statues to be presented to veterans and veteran's families in honor of those men who liberated Ravenoville. Uncle Sonny's likeness will be on one of the statues. His younger brother, Bill, will be there to see it.

Interesting stuff.

I suppose that "Lt. Spears" is the guy from "Band of Brothers"?

I think Spears was in another company before taking command of Easy; might have been Able.

We posted a picture of Ollie Barrington on the 506 website

He was so young. Don't forget we still have young men and women dying in Afghanistan.

OD isn't company specific. The OD (officer of the day) can come from any company in a battalion or brigade.

I'd bet it was Ronald Spiers.

Just rewatched Band of Brothers. My father is headed to Bastogne with His uncle, Ollie's younger brother, to visit the sites of Ollie's travels during the war, and to lay a a wreath in the area outside Noville in the Bastogne region where Ollie was killed. His uncle Bill idolized his older brother and Ollies death was excrutiating for him. This will be tough. Tears will still flow all these long years after the war.

Thanks for posting. It's possible our Great Uncles crossed paths at some point. Mine was from Houston, attended A&M and served in Easy.

Thanks for sharing that. I really got a kick out of how so many of the words were spelled like they sounded.

I also thought it was funny that he got restricted for getting into trouble with the Negroes. A different era.

I liked the distinction between "drinking up" and "drinking beer". Must've been two different things.

Really interesting. Spellbinding, almost. His picture brought it alive. The staccato-like nature of his diary causes one to want to ask questions.

Bump for 70th anniversary of D-Day

Here is a statuette they've dedicated of Uncle Sonny in Ramonville France today. It is his likeness.
