Decided to look up his bio for the first time last night and saw that he committed suicide. I had never known this. Does anyone have any info on his life post WWII? Maybe an early case of PTSD?
It's not widely known that SSgt. William G. Harrell, one of the Aggie Medal of Honor recipients, died by his own hand in a murder suicide. Lots of demons haunt heroes as well as the not so famous warriors.
I did a bunch of research on General Moore back when I was in school and living in Moore. I used to occasionally give brief talks to the kids in the dorm or anyone else that would want to listen to me.
IIRC (and its been a long time since I've looked at those notes), he never really recovered from those 4 1/2 years he spent in a POW camp. I think he was released in like September 45. He got out of the service in the summer of 49 I think. I seem to remember some speculation (or maybe it was only my own) that getting out of the army after 40+ years gave him more time with his demons from the war.
