The classic war movie "We've Never Been Licked", filmed on our beloved (not beveled ) campus was released 70 years ago last week!

Released in England as Texas to Tokyo.

I've always wondered what the Brits thought of it.

I remember watching that movie at the grove during summer school circa 1977 and thinking WTF? It is so campy it is cool I suppose.

I never understood the love. The first half is about how backwards and redneck A&M is. The second half is about a traitor. The whole thing sounds like the script was written by my 6 year old.

It's not about the plot or actors, it's about the chance to see A&M in the 1940's during war time and how you are tied to the Aggieland of old!

It's yell practice on the steps of the Y, Bonfire, Final Review, marching to chow with the Aggie Band playing, dining hall vocabulary (which is now on life support, if not dead); the senior boots, military walk, the Aggie Ring, scenes of the original Rev and campus.

As E King Gill stated: "The love for A&M is not born outside, it is born within it walls. You must love it and have it touch your heart;Devotion to one's country should be the same. That is, and was, the true A&M tradition."

Watched it at Guion Hall my fish semester before the tu game.

I was impressed about the cadence of the yells compared to our's in '65 and present day.

GTFO if you don't feel proud about this movie

Sorry I'm not proud about a ****ty movie that mocks A&M

You are way off, TM. How can you possibly believe the movie mocks A&M? Its whole intent is to GLORIFY A&M.

It's listening to Noah Berry give one of the ubiquitous famous four fish answers while walking in the street gutter. We all found that hilarious in the fall of 1970 as a brand new fish Jones.

Campy WWII time B flick. Priceless time photo of Texas A&M. Most places never get a snap shot like that, but A&M never was 'most' places. Or at least it used to not be.

TM states that his sixth grader wrote this movie.

Yep there is not one computer animation, special effects, etc. It was just a simple movie about a little known great university in central texas that sent more men as officers in ww2 than the other two service academies combined.

The Corps Center just received a donation of an original screenplay script.

Isn't Tango Mike the same dude that was made a racist name for the Commandant over a dog?

Don't think that was TM. Too much, even for him.

He's just an old grouch that enjoys being a curmudgeon and iconoclast, and stirring up (stuff) online.

You know, like 95% of the people on TexAgs.

I'm the guy that blasted the guy who made up the racist nickname. I'm angry as ****, but I'm not old

And yes, I derive great pleasure from stirring up the interwebs. I needle my wife and kids at home, but as a junior officer in a 4-star HQ, I don't get much fun at work so I resort to TexAgs. I'm not wound nearly as tight in real life as my TexAgs persona implies

Got the special edition reissue of it back during Centennial years. VHS tape came in nice case with copies of the movie posters and several media photos.
Two twin ladies at our church were in the dance scene at Sbisa dining hall. Made a couple of screen shots for them as memories of that time. They were students at Texas Women's Normal College (later TWU) at the time and came down on the train that is depicted in the movie.
Robert Mitchum was a real a$$ about it all - said something to the face that he'd never want to go back to that two-bit cow college again!

The urban legend I heard was that he didn't like the movie and years later when he was a bigger star tried to buy the rights to it so he could deep six it.

I knew I wasn't making this up. From imdb:

Interesting bit of trivia

I worked for years with Aggie Cinema and we used to show this movie to the incoming freshman at our outdoor theater, the Grove. Aggie Cinema is defunct, along with the Grove so I'm not sure if the freshman get to see this gem any more.

The interesting bit of trivia was that we were constantly trying to get decent copies of this film to show in the days long before movie restoration. We kept coming up empty handed. We later found out that Robert Mitchum had bought up most of the copies and burned them because he hated his performance. It was not a bad performance. This could have been a lost piece of film lore! Also, note the "mountains" in the scenes of College Station's countryside, which is rolling coastal plain.
