Anyone know why the FOW Cadre in the Facebook pictures aren't wearing Howdy Hats?

Campaign covers are no longer worn during FOW. Campaign covers will be worn by the "duty company" each day. The duty company has responsibility for flag raising/lowering on campus, guard room and escort duties.

Weird... one of the fondest memories i had was meeting the pissheads as a fish. A little piece of me died today.

Whaaaat? More than a few changes I'll have to get used to, but that's the way it is.

I wore my campaign hat more then any other cover I had. Absolutely loved that thing. Still have it. One of the few items of memorabilia that was not lost on an overseas move.

I heard that there was concern with how putting on campaign covers apparently turned the cadre into big meanies that started acting like Lou Gossett, Jr. on day 1 of FOW and scared too many fish away before they could become acclimated.

While I understand that you don't need them to be effective trainers, and that it may help in retaining a few fish here and there, I still find these kinds of changes disappointing.

Meh, still more than possible to be scary to fish without wearing a Campaign Cover. Just ask the VMI Cadre. They wear black baseball caps, black t-shirts & camo trousers. It's all about the approach.

I don't think it's that big of a deal.

I loved my campaign hat, but you can ask any Army contracts from '78-80 how they felt about the senior Black Hats who got them ready for Ft Riley. It doesn't matter the hat, it is all in the approach.

If I remember correctly, those hats cost a pretty penny. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-60 bucks. Why force cadets (or the government) to buy them if they only wear them during guard room? That's only 1-2 hours a month.

Aren't they the correct cover to wear when it rains? Is that still allowed?

If a pisshead is having trouble controlling himself wouldn't it be better to actually train him up than it is to just ban the hat?

That's a problem that can only be fixed from within an outfit, and even if you had buy-in from the entire butt and zip class, pissheads are the dumber than fish and take it upon themselves to uphold all the traditions of old army that never existed.

I am for change. I dont want anyone to think i am resistant. I remember from an early age A&M represented with the icon of Ol' Sarge. I see the howdy hat in many ways a representation of that. I also see the howdy hat as when i was a fish the cadre used to wear them. I can understand if the Comandant wanted to move away from them as in a training environment campaign covers were typically reserved for trained DIs

Heard that too. Wouldn't be surprised if it was more about the parents freaking out. Some of the comments on the FOW pictures on Facebook are pretty hilarious. Also sad.

Guys wearing campaign covers (DIs) didn't scare me near as much as guys wearing black baseball caps (Airborne Cadre).
