I've seen this footage in some case studies before, but I never thought I'd see it released publicly.

Embedded footage in this interview shows Super 61 crashing.

That woman is so gorgeous.

At Drum we had quite a few senior NCOs and Officers who were there - either Rangers or 10th Mountain. I've heard quite a few interesting things from that incident.

I worked with an AF enlisted guy who was a gunner on an AC-130 that was sitting on the deck when this was going down.

They were screaming for permission to get in the air and were denied at every request.

Lara Logan is the only reason I pay any attention to 60 Minutes. She is stunning. And her political views are pretty good. From Wiki:
quote:
Logan was criticized in June 2010 for her remarks about another journalist, Michael Hastings, and her view that reporters who embed with the military ought not to write about the general banter they hear. An article by Hastings in Rolling Stone that month quoted General Stanley A. McChrystal and his staff—comments Hastings overheard while traveling with McChrystal—criticizing U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden and other officials, after which President Obama fired McChrystal as his commander in Afghanistan.[12] Logan told CNN that Hastings' reporting had violated an unspoken agreement between reporters who travel with military personnel not to report casual comments that pass between them....

In October 2012, Logan delivered a speech before the annual luncheon of the Better Government Association in which she sharply criticized the Obama Administration's statements about the War in Afghanistan and other conflicts in the Arab world. In particular, Logan criticized the Obama Administration's claims that the Taliban was weakening in Afghanistan, calling such claims "a major lie" made in preparation for ending the U.S.military role in that country. She also stated that she hoped that the United States would "exact revenge" for the 2012 Benghazi attack, in which U.S. diplomatic personnel were attacked and killed in Libya...

I have a buddy who involved in that. He wound up wounded.

Was hanging out at his place when the movie came out. He refused to see it, we wound up watching some home video of them while in Germany.
That weekend was very emotional for him. His wife finally got him to go to bed.

Having heard a first hand account, I still refuse to see the movie.

I am convinced Lara Logan is the only mainstream TV journalist with the guts to go where the story is and tell the story of the common soldier.

One of the first stories I saw of hers--from 2008--with the 101 ID from a FOB in eastern Afghanistan.

General Lawson magruder and my dad have been friends for years, magruder went to tu and became a general and cg of 10th mountain and commander of joint task force kismayo. He was there while this went down and to listen to him talk about this is astonishing.

He speaks a lot and is a hell of a man. If it weren't for him I may have never gone to OCS.

On a side note, he was recently inducted into the ranger hall of fame.

AC-130s were ordered out of the country in July 93 due to the peacekeeping nature of the mission.

They would have drastically changed the actions post crash.

I remember in bootcamp, getting a "lesson" about Marines in Somalia. How we came in with tanks (which weren't great for city streets, but were a good force projection) and had few problems. When we left and te "peacekeeping" began, they decided no tanks and problems began.

This is over-simplified, but I've been drinking.

I don't have all that great an opinion of the journalistic profession in the 21st century but Lara Logan has paid her dues in a way that few others ever have and instead of quitting she persists.

She's South African so there's your answer as to why she's not like other MSM reporters.

South Africans have a whole different perspective. Especially the ones who have remained in RSA post-Apartheid.

Thanks for posting those other 60 Minutes links. I've been living in Australia for almost 6 years and 90% or better of content shown on American TV is blocked for us. I'm glad to finally be able to watch 60 Minutes without having to wait several months for the re-broadcast of a few US stories on the Australian 60 Minutes show.

Here's the link to the Super Six One story.

One question I have from watching the interview is about Al-Qaeda. In the interview, they state that when we were fighting Mohamed Farrah Aidid, we were fighting Al-Qaeda.

Am I missing something here or does CBS News seriously need to hire a military historian so they can get their story straight? Because if Somalia in 1993 was Al-Qaeda then that makes Bill Clinton's inaction during the 1990s look even worse. I always assumed that Somali warlords were just localized ********s and not any part of a larger organization.

Somalia was al Qaeda's first win against the US. Read What al Qaeda Is Doing Next in Military Review for a good first-person history of the organization and why they're going back to Africa

Tango Mike - thanks for the mention of Military Review. I only made it as far as being a Junior Armor Officer so I was unaware of this magazine. Armor Magazine was all I ever read in my era. It looks like Military Review has issues online. I think I'll start reading this regularly.

Do you happen to remember what issue the Al-Qaeda article you mentioned was in?

It will come out in the next one, actually. It's been accepted for publish, but it didn't make it in time for this edition.

Armor and Infantry magazines have become advertisement bundles for AUSA and industry. They won't even take more than 2-3 articles per edition any more. Military Review and Small Wars Journal are much better reads now, I think

I guess he embellished a bit then.

Yes, if we would have had one in the air, this fight would have ended quickly.
