Is Obama really taking the time out of his day to worry about the hats or is some high up brass pushing Obama to do this.

I think its the latter and the headline is just fodder for more, "THANKS OBAMA RUINING 'MURICA" fodder.

But then again, maybe the man really cares about hats.

It's a cover.........not a hat. I really hate when people write these stories and screw up the little things. We are Marines, not marines or soldiers. It is a cover, not a cap or hat.

Check you Corps history. These covers are not new. These are the covers Marines wore during WWI and the early 20th century. They changed to the current barracks cover during the interwar.

The hats look dumb, but I doubt anything will be changed. And yes, if it goes on your head, you are allowed to call it a hat.

Can you post a bigger picture please? That hat looks dumb. And the reason for wanting to change it is even dumber.

AR, true, but it doesn't really look like the "Dan Daly" cover you posted...besides, what operational advantage do we gain with that new cover?

Current cover that I wear with my dress blues was adopted in 1922, I know my history been in this gun club for almost 20. I still disagree with the Dan Daly cover idea. Good night Chesty Puller, wherever you are!

According to what some others are saying this will reduce uniform procurement costs since female covers cost more than male.

I am not a fan of it, but too many are outright calling it "gay" without realizing where the design comes from.

Whomever suggested that idea should be kicked in the crotch one time for every year the Marine Corps has existed. Then he should be forced to film an apolgy statement to be broadcast to all Marines currently serving around the world.

if this happens, i'm done.

Hope and Change? Just another attempt to make the USMC unisex.

The old Barracks covers were also never worn without a high collar tunic or blouse with a tie for a damn good reason i.e. they look like part of a clown costume with shirt sleeves and an open collar.



The Field Hat (a.k.a. Campaign Cover) was the soft cover worn in the field with just a shirt.

This is almost as stupid as the slapdick that made it so Marines cannot roll their sleeves in cammies.

GREAT post.

I used this thought process for nearly every decision I made while in the Corps. It was baffling to me how often we did things that had zero effect on our combat readiness. Of course, I met resistance every day. I was just thought to have a 'bad attitude.'

According to my father in law who was with C 1/7 (Suicide Charlie) during Vietnam, they never used to roll sleeves. He asked me the first time he ever saw me in cammies why my sleeves were rolled up. My Master Guns pretty much said the same thing that when he first joined they never rolled sleeves.

Sleeves down in the field for Infantry who are in the field most weeks. It only affects POGs, so I'm not worries.

Back in topic, attended a brief with Chaos earlier today. The following is his assessment and my comments -

Finally, on covers, it was a classic case of headline whoring and even the Uniform Board is simply looking for a new source and design for WM covers. Not a bad thing since the old supplier folded and now is the time to revisit to see if changes make sense. I personally liked that WM DIs finally got campaign cover
