i think there are too many eagles, stars, and 8999s with too much time on their hands, and i think this:

quote:
Col. Todd S. Desgrosseilliers, the Marine Corps Uniform Board president, said: “The surveys often contain photo illustrations that portray what a uniform article might look like when worn by a Marine. This is a very standard practice. While there was never any desire or intent to change the male Marine dress cover, the feedback we have received to maintain this iconic cover has been heard, loud and clear.”

is complete bull**** and revisionist history.

I'm glad the military is spending so much time and resources worrying about this

Special Forces guys are above the law that the rest of us plebeians must follow

Speaking of special forces guys, I chanced to visit a Barnes and Noble before Christmas and they had some authors of military books signing their books for customers. Richard Marcinko today looks a bit like Jerry Garcia did in his later years.

No one is above the law, but I really think that hair styles and tatoos have absolutely no effect on combat performance.

That opinion was driven home after doing a mission with CAG. Those guys look and dress more like professional surfers than Soldiers.

Nick, that's got to be a contractor. Unless the pic is circa gulf war I.

Ya, that cat is not young. There are a lot of National Guard SF guys that are up there in age - perhaps he falls into that category.

Besides being old and not in shape, take a look at that desert camo pattern. If he's active duty and SF, that's got to be the 90s.

Nope, we(the Army) used that pattern up until ~2005/2006 when it was replaced by the ACU.

SMUs are not SF. SMU operators wear various camo combinations, are mostly "older" and often have beards like that. I usually wore desert camo with Salomon running shoes

In short, that pic is not a contractor, not Special Forces, and not from the 90s.

SMU?

Tier 1 Special Mission Units. Most operators are much older than you'd think, and all wear whatever uniform kit and shoes make them work best.

That guy isn't Tier 1 from this decade.

Gator,

I'm going to take a wild guess that you were/are not combat arms.

Edit: I won't play this game, you can assume I've read the Amazon reviews of Lone Survivor.

Well dang. I was going to use the lack of comm gear to make my case but after taking a closer look, he's got the boom mic hiding behind his beard.

Even still, when I started doing ground integration work in '05 our Tier 1 guys were already wearing multi-cams or ACUs or whatever y'all call them. So I'd still date this photo at about 10 years ago with the rest of my posts.

Pretty sure he's in Afg...check the cat in the background. I'm guessing early 2000s.

Tango, are SMUs different than Delta? I've never heard that term (but I'm a Marine, not Army).

Not trying to play a game or be rude. Just seems a little odd. I wore that uniform(dcu) in 2005 and as tango mike stated, there are a lot of older guys in the SF community. I would add that NG SF are senior citizens compared to the rest of the combat arms community.

So I'll take a different guess - you're a jtac or combat controller?
Tango Mike

Delta is one of the Special Mission Units

Green, Blue, Orange, STS

Nope. Prior Gunship guy and currently do contract work with a bunch of team guys.

I understand that your average Tier 1 guy is older.

I'd expect at least a peltor headset for anything recent. Also, I'm an expert at picking out contractors trying to look like Tier 1 and until I saw that boom mic that's what I saw. I just didn't notice it until i opened the picture on a computer.

That picture has been around forever, he was in Afghanistan before there were contractors over there.

He signed my copy of Rogue Warrior for me in 98 at Lejeune. Does his beard still go all the way to his eyes sir?

I am ok with it. I think they are talking about your more eccentric styles. The Marine Corps has always been known for higher and more strict regs. You want to keep your lettuce like you are back on the block, then stay back on the block.
