Girlfriend is one semester away from graduating (in 3 years, with a minor) and applying for Army OCS. I've been enlisted for a little over 3 years now and imagining HER going to Basic, OCS, and BOLC is kicking my defensive instincts into gear.

Meanwhile, I just got a postcard and email from the PA State Police saying I am eligible to participate in the next hiring cycle, after I applied last April. Anybody here experience living in a different state than your spouse was located for an extended amount of time?

It happens more than you think. It tough but doable.

If my spouse were in the military and I was not, I think I'd look for a more portable job than a state patrolman. Not saying you should teach, but a teacher is a good example of a job that travels well.

Already had my Associate's in Criminal Justice and security experience by the time we met. I've been set on law enforcement a couple years now. And the part where I said I've been enlisted for over 3 years now is referring to my status as an enlisted member of the PA National Guard. I'd love to just pick up and leave but it's not really in my best interests at the moment. PSP starts out at a little over $53K so I am not about to just turn it down and try to become a LEO wherever she goes

Maybe seek a position with the DOD police.

Well, I wish you both the best. I expect it will be tough. My daughter and her husband probably were apart 50% of the time during their first two years of marriage due to schools or deployment.

Like you, they knew it when they went in. Unlike you, they are both in the service, and can ask to be stationed together.

Are you planning on getting out before she commissions? Something else to consider is that when she commissions, you will still be enlisted, and that's a no go as I am assuming you know. If yall are planning on getting married anyway, you need to lock it up legally before she pins. Teaching or nursing are great careers for those who travel a lot.
