I'm an E-4 68W looking for a new unit.

Is there a way I can see units that currently have an open E-4/5 slot for my MOS?

My COC isn't against me changing, but won't go out of their way to facilitate it, so I'm trying to search on my own.

call a guard recruiter. USAR vacancies are online in HRC, but not guard slots.

What is a 68W in plain English?

Either combat medic or quasi-nurse, depending on the unit's mission. I'm the former.

Pretty much every Infantry/Armor/Artillery/Engineer Battalion HHC has a Medical Plt, so you got lots of choices. What part of the state are you looking at?

Yeah, that's my hope.

I'd prefer DFW, and I best case would be an aviation unit.

However, I'm casting a wide net right now.

Usually open E5 slots are rare. You got PLDC out of the way yet? If you are in a Bn HHC now you should be able to go over and talk to the PSNCO and get a booklet on where the units are around the state, phone numbers/armories, etc. Make a few phone calls and find out which units are under strength and have openings. E4 to E5 is a major jump in the ARNG and you need some luck to find a slot sometimes. Used to be a Tank Bn HQ east of town in Terrell and a Tank Bn HQ in Fort Worth. But that was years ago when I still active. Units change but an IN or AR BN is probably the best choice for an open slot in an HHC Med Plt. Everyone wants the 'easy' units. Nothing is free. Good luck.

I am an old phart, retired O6. I was looking at the current TxARNG website and see that MG Len Smith is the Asst AG for Army down at Camp Mabry. I remember when he was an semi-obnoxious 1LT 24 years ago. Everyone grows up, though.

Aye, there aren't any that I'm aware of in my unit, either.

Haven't been to PLDC (now it's WLC); again, my unit doesn't seem to get slots.

I'm in a line unit, not HHC. I'll see if I can get in touch with the PSNCO anyway.

It's funny, though, the paths we take. Most of my peers from A&M are making O-3.

I'm currently in an Infantry BN HHC in Fort Worth. I'll see what E-4/5 openings the med platoon has right now.

Don't forget the Brigade and Division Support Battalion Med company's. That's where most of the 68W E5 slots reside. I know that means leaving a line unit but if it get's you your E5 spend the time to do it then after getting your first good NCOER start looking for a line unit to go back to. As long as you stay a year nobody will be mad for you jumping back to a line unit.

I was the BN Cdr for 372FSB 49AD back from '97 to '00. Our Med company (C Co) was in Texarkana then. Bn HQ was in Dallas. 949FSB was in Fort Worth, but I forget where their C Co was, though.

11B E4 in the PA ARNG hoping to transfer to TX ARNG when I am done with school up here. My unit gets quite a few slots for schools so they are trying to send me to WLC as soon as this Summer. They actually offered me a slot for this week, but I can't miss that much class :/

Kyle: Thanks, that sounds good!
CT: I had thought about doing that, but doesn't jumping units look bad, similar to jumping civilian companies?
StrykerAg: Take as much as you can! My section has had approximately 0 slots that have been offered to us.

Side note: Does anyone know about 2-149th? Their C Company (MEDEVAC) seems to be out of San Antonio, but I'm seeing units in Grand Prarie, too. I found them via Facebook.

Check out HHC 3-144IN in Fort Worth. 3 companies returned from overseas in May and one got back a couple weeks ago. Might have some openings.

Will do.

Happen to know anyone heading over soon? PM's welcome, or my email is in my profile.

Just following up to make sure you got the RRNCO's email and phone for the 2-149. The guys I spoke with who know people in the unit spoke well of it.
