I went to OCS with this scumbag. Apparently, his Guard unit knew something was off as they sent the police to do a H&W check on him. His brother seems like a real winner to boot.

Did his unit fail his wife by not delving further in to things? Or did they do all they could? I know the military has evolved big time in the mental health arena, but is it enough? According to her family, there was a history of some sort of DV which is why she filed. Her mistake was trusting he wouldn't do anything stupid, even after his past history. The last picture on his facebook page she put up and tagged him in was two days prior to killing her, and at a school function for the 3 year old. The smile never reached his eyes. It is very creepy. My heart is breaking for his kids.

P.S. no deployments if any one is curious.

Having been an active duty officer assigned as an inspector-instructor at a Marine reserve unit I am impressed that the Guard unit requested any follow-up with the police just because a member of the unit missed a drill or meeting. There may be a lot more to the story (and likely is a lot more) but nothing in this story suggests that his Guard unit was negligent. They have no authority over a soldier who is not drilling or on active duty orders and unless he has communicated a threat or show some evidence of being dangerous they really don't have a basis to call police to investigate. Nothing in that article indicates that there was such evidence of danger.

Behavioral Health is something the active duty side is making a priority. It is crazy what we do. We have all sorts of master policy and orders in place and provide BH treatment at multiple levels in multiple ways. It is getting to be a major component of military health care. Also when it comes to these scenarios it is unfortunate but sometimes it seems like no matter what you do they still happen. We literally baby sit Soldiers that never should have been allowed to join in the first place just to keep things like this from happening. It is a tremendous drain on manpower and resources. I also agree with the post above and the fact that the guard doesn't have the time or resources.
