Not allowed to, from what I've heard. Such a shame to watch such an old tradition die. There have been midnight yell torches for years

Is it in regards to the new stadium? Some sort of fire hazard? Or did the University just make up a stupid rule? How old is the tradition?

A-Batt was making torches when I got there in '99, and it wasn't a new idea then. I'll ask my torch corporal buddy about it.

No truth to the rumor that there will never be torches again. There WILL be torches!

Problem is, we have to ensure they are made safely, with proper supervision, and with approved materials.

We are meeting next week with the "Torch Corporals" to review procedures and materials, and will make whatever adjustments we have to make to ensure we are doing this safely. Once we are confident we are doing this safely, with approved materials, we WILL have torches again.

As a former BQ, I remember marching into Kyle Field with the Band for Midnight Yell Practice with the Yell Leaders and Drum Majors carrying torches. I also remember the Yell Leaders starting the Bonfire using those torches. I am a BIG FAN of torches, and will ensure that we maintain that tradition at Texas A&M once we are certain we doing it safely.

Thanks for your support of our Corps! Beat the HELL Outta Lamar!

Let me just say I really appreciate the Commandant taking the time out if his busy schedule to reply to random Corps related questions on TexAgs. That's awesome.

The university has come down with an approved torch for next week's midnight yell:

Did something happen to bring on this level of supervision? I really don't understand why this tradition is being put on hold in order to show how they make the torches. Shouldn't that only take a few hours anyway? Why weren't the BQs able to do this weeks ago so that the tradition wasn't put on hold? Seems like a lot of "This tradition will not carry on this year but will be back next year" going on around here.

Relax. Torches will be back for the next home game. Nobody trying to "wait until next year" wrt the torches. We've met with the torch corporals, have ensured we have procedures in place to keep the process safe, and we WILL have torches for the next game's Midnight Yell Practice.

Any word if the new statues are going to be removed? They are truly hideous. I would be embarrassed to bring my family to campus with those gargoyles here. The corps and the band one are good, but the yell leader, the saw em off, and EKG look like angry aliens. The first time I saw a picture of them I assumed someone has photoshopped them as a joke.

I was laughing until i saw your comment about the yell leader statue. Angry alien indeed.

This seems to be the status quo with the stadium. The more and more that comes out, the more it seems like the administration gave lip service to the Corps when it came to considerations during planning and design. They designed it how they wanted. If we were able to still do our stuff, great. If not, they couldn't care less.

My son was one of the torch guys last year. They got into trouble during the pass down for, in my opinion, a completely bogus reason. Again, in my opinion, there has been some lack of leadership from the COC. LtCol Brewer has been outstanding with the guys, but communication was less than ideal thoughout.

As of the first game, the boys were told that the reason there was no torches was because of EHS. I happen to know someone in administration and checked with them, and they said no, it was a disciplinary issue. My son said he knew nothing about that, at that time. A couple of days later, the letter came down from Student Services with the charges.

Guess I misunderstood your first quote. So this has nothing to do with health and safety, but is related to hazing charges?

GenRam, any comment?

Not sure how these rumors get so out of hand, but I'll state again what I said in an earlier post: RELAX.

We have met with the Torch Corporals, reviewed and updated procedures to ensure appropriate safety measures are in place - including how we make the torches, and there WILL be torches for the Ole Miss Midnight Yell Practice. Both Yell Leaders and Drum Majors will carry torches for Midnight Yell on 10 Oct.

Thanks for your support of our Corps, and BTHO Miss State!
