Thanks 2004FightinTxAg. Please let me know if you're headed back to Aggieland - I'll buy you a beer at the Chicken! And I look forward to showing you the Rehab Center and the renovations to the Quad.

Thumbs up for the Commandant.

Thumbs down for the folks giving him a hard time on this one.

Lots of good info and differing points - I can safely and accurately say that I'm glad the Corps stopped making cadets run in combat boots in the Fall of 1982 - saved me a lifetime of shin splints, crapped out knees, etc. I've run in combat boots (for a short period of time) and I've run in shoes that are meant for that. Call me a slacker, but I prefer Nikes.....

Bottom line - times change. What was good then, may not be good now. We get smarter and technology gets better. We'd be stupid not to capitalize on it.

(I'd love to go on a Corps run, but 0530 is way too early for me now. Maybe after my 3rd or 4th cup of coffee....)

Definitely agree on the combat boots. When I commissioned, you still ran the army PT test in boots and it tore up my knees and shins. I was barely able to run the two miles and it took me several hours for the discomfort to subside. The first time I ever ran in true running shoes, I was able to do three miles easy and after that I began to enjoy running, usually starting every day with a five mile run.

As for the clinic, anything that helps keep the cadets healthy is okay in my book.

And yeah, 5:30 is a little early for me too.

I also heard high porting is gone. As much as I hate to see old traditions go away, high porting was absolutely pointless, not to mention harmful on cadets shoulders.

It's my understanding high porting had been gone for several years. At least 5.

I'm on break.

It's one of those things that if you were a cadet when it happened you'd be complaining about old army dying. But when you look at it from a more mature adult perspective, you realize that it's just not worth the risk.

  • We tried this when I was in the Corps. The director of Beutel, who had a son in the Corps, would run a sick call clinic 2 days a week for an hour. I think 0730-0845, or something like that. It was run out of the Corps Commander office in Guard Room and was very successful. But it had to get cancelled because of some technical issue (staffing/budgets/time constatints., etc.). But while it was great for most things, they weren't good with sports injuries. I know because I was misdiagnosed by them.

I have always thought the Corps should have something like that, so I am very glad to see the new program in place. As an outfit CO, I saw way too many problem created by the need to send cadets to Beutel whenever they needed care. Beutel also provided the cadets who wanted to chop out a lot more opportunities to do so. I would expect this program to actually reduce the opportunities for slacker cadets to chop out.

I'm sure being the Commandant has it's perks and can be very rewarding, but at the same time it must be a lot like being the head football coach.

Everybody in the stands thinks they know how to do it better and no matter what decision you make half the people are going to ***** and moan......

It sounds like this facility has the potential to do some great work.

However, so does sick call in the military - yet for some reason I always have an influx of joes the day of the APFT.

Yes Animal it goes along with being in a position of leadership. I'm sure the Commandant is used to it.

Thanks for your in depth insight there 2004...and just in case anyone was still on the fence, thanks for the confirmation.

The Corps has some fatbody wimps that will do anything to get out of putting forth effort and taking responsibility for being fatbody wimps. They existed back then and they exist today.

When was the last time someone was kicked out of the Corps for not meeting physical standards?

How do you determine when someone is just being a whiny b**** that wants to sleep in and eat jelly donuts?

BTW, the clinic is great for people with legitimate injuries. Fantastic resource, and thanks to the volunteers.

Several cadets were not approved to return for this Spring semester due to failed PT and/or Ht/Wt. Fish have until the end of their first year to pass and upperclassmen must pass by the end of each semester or they are not approved to return for the next semester.
