I was I&I for D 2/14 in El Paso from 1990-2002. I&I duty was not where I wanted to go and El Paso was also not on my list of places to go (I grew up 40 miles west of there). However, I really enjoyed that tour.

I&I duty was a great opportunity for autonomy and I had a great 1stSgt and staff. As luck would have it, the reserve CO was a guy with whom I went to high school. D 2/14 was in the Navy Marine Corps Reserve Center directly across highway 54 from Ft. Bliss. The access to commissary, exchange, and William Beaumont AMC was very convenient. Delta is also ~30 minutes away from the firing points at the Dona Ana range. If you happen to be an 0802 I would recommend Delta battery as an option though they are now HIMARS rather than tube artillery.

My Battalion HQ was in Grand Prairie on the old NAD Dallas installation and the regimental headquarters was at JFRB Carswell. I know that there's a track company in Galveston and infantry companies in Autsin and Houston and a unit in Waco I cannot recall.

There's also a Recon unit in San Antonio. A Company, and Battalion HQ. It's basically on the edge of Ft. Sam. Most of the guys I know who have been here loved it. San Antonio is a great military city, but very few Marines ever come through here. You get all the advantages of bases, exchanges, commissaries, etc.
