Accidentally landed at a commuter airport instead of MacDill AFB and had to go balls to the wall to get it back in the air. This is from 2012, but I hadn't seen it before and figured I would share.

I remember as a kid a commercial plane landing at Cabaniss Field, a naval auxiliary field, instead of Corpus Christi International. Didn't realize until now how common this was.

quote:
According to the AP tally released Monday, there's been 35 landings and 115 approaches or aborted landing attempts at wrong airports by commercial passenger and cargo planes over more than two decades.

But many events aren't disclosed to the media, so there could be many more going unrecorded.

They do it all the time at airshows. They usually have a C-130 take of and land before hand for comparison and the 17 usually takes off and lands within the same distance as the 130. It is freaking awesome.

Ryan, you posted the landing. Here's a video of the takeoff that hit my Facebook feed.

One of my friends at A&M had a pilot's lcense, I didn't get mine for another 20 years. He still flies for American Eagle. But in the 70s we would rent a 172 at Hearne, and a taildragger at Coulter Field. I was flying with him once when he landed on a really, really short runway. I mean, he had to chop the throttle and stand on the brakes, and we barely stopped, tires smoking, before we ran off the end of the runway.

He looked over at me with his eyes bugging out and said, "Man! What a short runway!"

I said, "Yeah. But look how wide it is!"

Hey Canyon, that sounds like the U-10's (Helio Courier) we flew in Thailand. They could get off the ground in about 150 feet and land in about half that distance. For a short field landing we always landed with th parking brakes ON. If you want to see this in action Google - U-10 take off.

Was it the Helio or the Maule.???...one of them, they filmed it taking off from inside a hanger. Was airborne before it got out the door.

Ours were U-10D's and I think they were the only D models in SEA.

On the horizon about 30 miles out from the "cockpit" is the Gulf of Tonkin. That's me in the back and yes we were over North VietNam.

Sgt Richard Saunders took this pic in Laos wit Lt Peterson. Vien-Tiane I think. Both of these aircraft were in the 606th SOS at Nakon Phanom RTAFB, Thailand in 1966.

Sorry, I was unclear. I wasn't doubting the plane you flew. I was trying to recall which aircraft had the hanger-takeoff video. And it was the Maule.

No offense taken. After being in and around the U-10 I would liked to see the Maule takeoff roll. Once we were on a test flight and my pilot wanted to shoot some T&G's at the little city air field. It had rained the night before and about 200 feet, or so, in from the aproach end of the runway was a large water puddle that covered 2/3 the width of the runway. My pilot liked red wine and I liked I.W Haper so I made him a bet that he couldn't land and come to a complete stop before hitting the water. I lost a bottle of wine on that one so ignorant me said "double or nothing you can't get airborne before we get to the water from where we had just stopped". We were 10 feet over the water when we got to it. I got him two bottles of Lieb Frau Milche (sp) when we got back home.
