I am expending far too much energy on this, but since the the "rumor hogs" seem to have invaded FOW, and apparently know EVERYTHING about FOW now, including how Fish Yell Practice is going to be conducted, I feel compelled to respond.

First, our planning for FOW this coming school year has just begun. There will have to be changes made due to COVID-19, but to what extent we do not know yet. We are making assumptions that we won't be able to gather in large groups, eat chow in Duncan with over 1500 fish and cadre at the same time, have "mass" briefings in Rudder Theater, etc. We are going to make FOW work, but it will no doubt be different because of restrictions being imposed due to COVID-19.

However, we are still planning to have Fish Yell Practice (Air Out), and as I mentioned before, it will look just like it has in years past. A couple of years ago we put in restrictions for moving the fish to the plaza once they were outside the dorms, to ensure we didn't have another fish fall and break his arm (which happened a few years back, mainly due to a group of fish running to the plaza, being pushed by upperclassmen, and a fish falling and breaking his arm). Cadets are in control, including in the dorms, and all we monitor is "others" who try to enter the dorms without permission to do so. Cadet Cadre get the cadets up, and move them out of the dorms and onto the plaza for Yell Practice. The last couple of years Coach Fisher and I have stood by the arches watching the fish move to the plaza, and its been a "good bull experience" for all of us, including the coach.

So relax on the rumors about Fish Yell Practice. It'll be a fun event for all, just as in years past, despite whatever BOGINT your "source" is feeding you.

Thanks to all for your love and support of the Corps! Gig 'em!

sucks if true. My son will be a fish this year and we had watched the few videos of air out that are online and he was pumped.

Of course, with all this covid bull****, I'll be thrilled if they are on campus and having school and the corps.

Why would you ruin the surprise by telling him about it?

General Ramirez, I appreciate your clarity and quickness to respond. Thank you for addressing not just these concerns, but all of the others that have been brought up in this forum in the past, and most certainly future. I wish more leaders on campers were so willing to be reachable and transparent in their decisions.

Air out in reverse -1946- Fish gave P-heads a 50 yard head start -then grabbed slow ones and

proceeded to haze them severely ! I escaped by laying down by side of house close to Dorm 8.

Fish walked right by without noticing me .

Some P-heads were stripped of their clothes on one side of the campus and forced to walk

back to the dorm amidst some ridicule !

Couldn't read the Batt but believe the two photos are of Yell Practice at the Y - not Goodwin.

I got called up - Navy - in October . My post referred to 1946 but I believe it was 1947.

It was Fish Day when they were allowed to haze P-heads . ( If they could catch them )

Believe they had a dance at Sbisa later.

When I was a Frog in 45 we caught several P-heads. Long story short - I and 2 other Frogs

caught Country Higgins '48 close to Duncan - told him "Mr. Higgins , You're coming with us " !

The band then started playing the National Anthem - we had to stand at attention - but Country

took off running. 4 year letterman football - no sense chasing him. He was killed in Korea when he

jumped on a grenade to save a company of South Koreans -two Silver Stars ! A real Hero !

Is Fish Day still observed where they get revenge in P heads ?

In my day, it was told to the fish, that they would be the PHeads for a day, and they would get to discipline the PHeads, who would act as fish for a day.

It was sold as a training exercise, where they would get real world training to prepare them to be upperclassmen next year.

What happened was the PHead did act like fish....the stupidest, goofiest, most cluless fish you can image. Pajamas at formation, uniforms that looked like Mexican Generals, worst behavior possible. My favorite was one guy who found an actual d****e bag, filled it with water, and would squirt any fish who tried to dress him down.

Corps Bugler played Baby Elephant March as we marched to morning chow that day.

We fish couldn't get off the quad fast enough after chow and we didn't return to the dorm until after 4pm.

Don't remember "College Night " ! Apparently it was for Freshmen.

Did Goodwin even have steps that high ?

I still believe those photos were at the Y - is it possible they didn't have pictures at Goodwin

and used these to fill in ?

Gilchrist even with best intentions was a little pathetic trying to act gung ho at Yell Practice being a Tsip.

I've posted this on other threads, but what the hell, I've been out of school 50 years now, so it's okay to repeat myself. I get a chuckle out of everything's gone to hell every time there's a change. The oldest Texas Aggie ever got to know was Col Stewart Hervy '17. That's THE class of '17, the one that went to Camp Stanley. He was there when they announced the uniform change from what was once called the Confederate uniforms and now to be PC is referred to as West Point style. I loved to listen to him talk about pre WWI A&M. Turns out the sentiment on campus was before a real Texas Aggie would take off the Grey and put on those stupid boots, they ought to burn the place down and give it back to the Indians. Go back a little further, I'll bet you'll find a Battalion article or letter to the editor gripping about electric lights, paved streets, and indoor plumbing.

Wonder how he felt when the name of his team was changed from Farmers/Cadets to Aggies in 1916?

Also wonder if he knew Merlin Mitchell '17, the man that oversaw the branding of bevo (my neighbors grandfather)

Shall we also talk about the "Old Army Tradition" of Ring Dunking, which also didn't exist in my day?

Mom's class year was doing it, and she was just behind you if you're '77. She remembers it prior to that as well.

I've heard enough debate on the topic it seems to have not been universal during those years. Not trying to imply you're lying, but rings where being dunked by '77 for at least part of campus

Being a good artillery man I bet we could bracket in "Ring Dunking" and fire for effect with classes from the late '70s. It had to have coincided with making a big deal of "Ring Day".. My ring was mailed to my parents house in a pasteboard box. It was there when I got home from summer camp at Ft. Sill the summer of '69. My dad, class of '50 would have had a fit if I had put it in a glass of his Lone Stars.

And for the record, I'd just as soon not see the word "lying'' with one Texas Aggie refering to another.

I don't believe so.

He had a non Aggie son who was a pilot in WWII, and then was stationed at A&M in the 50's.

From my personal interactions and hearing stories I think it started in that time but was far from wide spread and didn't become a wide spread "tradition" until the mid 80's. When you talk to those classes, everyone knows and remembers "ring dunking," before that and some do and some don't.

Given the propensity for some to take offense or implication at the drop of a hat, I felt a qualifying statement was in order, as I was NOT accusing him.

Sorry to be slow, but no, no offense taken. All I can tell you for certain, is that my friends (mostly BQs and CTs and their girlfriends) never dunked rings.

Word was spread by the grapevine when each semester's rings arrived, and we hauled (butt) ASAP to the old exchange store, then the Ring Office, to grab ours and put it on.

Could someone, somewhere, been dunking rings any time since 1876? Sure. Was it known to my peers? No.

Same thing with pennies on Sully's feet. Some folks pretend it goes back to Sully himself. Never saw it in my day.

Of course an upperclassman will be assigned to each fish. Upon being awakened by a gentle tap on the shoulder while New Age Music flows through the dorm, each fish ( can we still say fish? Even tho we don't capitalize it? Fish lives do matter) will be offered a morning herbal tea or possibly a Chai tea so as not to take away freedom of choice. The fish will then be offered terry cloth robes, freshly warmed and pine scented to wear to the " Loupots Freshmen Yell Practice". Comfy slippers will also complete the Uniform of the Night.

fish will then be escorted by their assigned upperclassmen, in a calm non-disturbing manner (lifeguards will be present to ensure no running) to their assigned places around the bugle stand for an impromptu yell practice. Upperclassmen will ensure proper posturing and yelling techniques so fish do not strain themselves by exhibiting too much school Spirit.

After YP is over, fish will be walked back to their holes (Again, can I write that?) where counselors will be available to assuage any fears incurred during this evening of intense revelry.

Milk and cookies will be offered before fish are gently tucked in and sang to as visions of Aggieland dance in their heads...

The Starbucks on the quad will be open early the next morning for discussions of the evening event...

Let me qualify my statement by noting that I was never in the Corps, nor did I attend A&M as an undergrad. Came here for grad school in 2011.

Seems to me that the tradition of ring dunking is most heavily associated with the Dixie Chicken. Since the Chicken opened in 1974, it would make sense that the tradition is mostly associated with classes that received their rings sometime after that.

This article from The Batt puts it sometime in the late 70s. https://web.archive.org/web/20070929111513/http://media.www.thebatt.com/media/storage/paper657/news/2005/09/26/News/Unofficial.Tradition.Of.Ring.Dunking.Began.On.Accident-997822.shtml

FOW was wild in 1978. Caught this class of '82 by wild surprise. I can remember it like yesterday and can remember drinking Buckhorn beer (Pissheads were so cheap, that's what they bought us). Great memories. Please don't lose this tradition.
