Only 2x Aggie grads - MG Lengyel (My personal choice) and CAPT Baxter

Interested to see if the academy grad President brings in an academy grad to run the corps

Bierman would be a solid choice, but not an Aggie.

I would think Lengyel is front runner.

I know Baxter fairly well and he would be a good choice. His son his a zip this year so he is aware of the recent Corps from a cadet/parent stand point.

God forbid we don't hire an Aggie! Oh no!

Next you are going to tell me A&M is going to hire an Air Force Academy grad to lead our university!

It is a fairly simple answer as to why we have not had a Navy commandant, up until COL Burton (1982-86), the Professor of Military Science (active duty) also served as Commandant.

I could care less Aggie or not. Results mean more than anything. Regardless of who they chose, 50% of the folks won't be happy.

I was just stating what my son (an Aggie as well) said about Bierman. He worked closely with him for about 3 years in Okinawa.

I remember Lengyel from my days in the Corps, but not what he's done in his Military career. Former Commandant of the Air Force Academy look pretty good on paper.

I don't care where the next guy went to school, as long as he gets the job done.
But I bet the people saying "god forbid we don't hire an Aggie" are the same people who were complaining when the old commandant was making the Corp's more like the service academies

Nope.

Our Corps is stuck in the 1950s. A little progressive movement for the Corps at A&M isn't bad.

And now cue the people to get upset about "but that's what makes the corps special!"

Commandant of Cadets, which is roughly equivalent to the VPSA at A&M.

My Brother-in-law (class of '9?) served with Baxter at Pearl Harbor and spoke to him a few weeks ago about the interview. He believes he would be a good hire but since he is only a Captain doesn't believe he'll get the job.

In fairness, Tim pretty much despises tech. At least he did when I was in the band.

That is the interesting thing to me. Been a LOOOOOONG time since we've had a commandant without a star.

Edit…full time, not interim. Last O6 commandant retired in 1986.

I know I am biased, but I would be less worried about stars and more about character and vision.

Some 'stars" seem like bureaucrats to me. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Same. He got his master's degree there, so he's not really a Red Raider (he went to Arkansas for his undergrad).

I was in the band from '97 - '01, when Toler was the director (a TCU grad). During Tech week, Rhea ALWAYS designed the drill, and it was the most complex and intricate drill we'd do all year. He'd also load it up with the most patriotic music he possibly could, all because the Tech band director at the time made some snide comment about the Aggie Band's music selection. And at Saturday morning drill, he'd give a speech reflecting his desire to absolutely wipe Tech off the field.

Greg Lengyel is a classmate of mine, Class of 85'. He was Wing Commander our zip year and was very redass. He was the epitome of what a sharp cadet is supposed to be. Just because he was Commandant of the AFA which he was the 2nd Aggie to hold that position, has zero to do with how he would be as the Commandant of the Corps.
Let's be clear, GRAM totally screwed up the Corps. He was a poison to not just the Corps, but to the University. He was the original DEI hire.

The current Corps is a joke. I was at the Rally to the Guidon 2 years ago and witnessed a cadet Corps that was basically a frat. There is no class destination. They are all buddies with each other. They look like crap in uniform. They have no pride in how they march, or how they behave as cadets. They are fat and out of shape. I looked at my old Aggieland and the pictures of how the Corps looked then as compared to now and it's night and day. We as seniors both contract and D&C were in shape and weren't obese. We took pride in how our uniforms looked. ESPECIALLY OUR BOOTS! There is a video of some senior from a few years ago. He was on Corps Staff and his boots were terrible. He only shined the toes.

Do yourselves a favor. Go look at how the Aggie Band looked in 1985. It's on youtube. A b.q. buddy of mine said that if you look at the "run up", when the band runs out on the field before they perform. It was crisp and precise. Now compare that to the "run up" now. It's a cluster f@ck. This is all due to lack of discipline and honestly laziness. Unfortunately, it's the norm now at TAMU.

Current cadets don't know how to properly wear the uniform. i saw several cadets with unshined boots, brass and bagged out uniforms. Several cadets were wearing their Corps Brass incorrectly. I literally asked a senior why his brass was turned 90 degrees. He acted like it was correct. It wasn't, and again that is the problem.

Greg Lengyel would be an excellent Commandant. The guy was squared away.

This will undoubtedly ruffle some feathers but that is not my intention at all, but I have an opinion based on my time in the Corps in an Army outfit and my son's time in a Navy/Marine outfit.

For some reason, when I was at A&M in the 90's, it always seemed like the the cadets in the Regiment were more concerned with the Navy/Marines than the Corps of Cadets. It was almost as if the Aggie Corps was a necessary inconvenience that had to be endured in order to participate in Navy/Marine activities. This even manifested in some significant disagreements between the ROTC personnel and the Trigon.

Fast forward to my son's time in the Corps, in a Navy/Marine outfit, a few years ago and I noticed the same thing.

I don't know why this is or if it has consistent through the years but it makes me hesitant to have a Commandant from that branch. The Corps is it's own unique organization and needs to be led by someone who believes in it's stand alone mission, not simply as a vehicle to other ends.

Relax Sherrif.
