I read an article that said the military will miss their checks on 15 Oct. Have things changed? When I retired many moons ago, I thought we only got paid at the end of the month.

Really? My retirement pay is only once a month, at the end of the month. I thought it was the same for everyone.

Retirement pay and VA compensation aren't affected by the shutdown.
