The far left government of Virginia going after VMI

There are bills pending to dissolve the governing Board of Visitors, move the school under the control of some HBCU, and launch a witch hunt to determine if enough has been done to eradicate "lost cause" ideology. If these are passed it will destroy VMI. The Dept. of War is looking into this as VMI is a senior military college.

Hopefully DOW can blunt any potential damage. I've gotten to know quite a few damn good guys/officers from VMI over the years. They produce solid officers as far as I'm concerned.

While there is a ton of history with the Army there, it is just an ROTC department. The Army could threaten to close the program, but it would be hard to justify since it does produce in the vicinity of 100 commissions a year. The threat of the Army pulling its program might be enough to stop any attempt to change it since it really would not exist if not for the Army department.

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

The left has been waging ideological war on VMI for decades. I still recall when they forced VMI to go coed. Then they made them get rid of the Stonewall Jackson statue. Then in recent events they had their own issue with firing a marxist professor and not renewing the contract of a woke, DEI loving commandant. Then there was the viral video of the cadet reaction to Trump's inauguration:

My mother grew up in Lexington, my dad went to W&L after the war and I came along during his junior year. My little brother graduated from VMI in 1971. I sort of have an affinity for the place and it's traditions. With the new VA Governor who knows what might happen. I really dislike Trump using federal funds to manipulate colleges but in this case it just may work in VMI's favor.
These are times that try men's souls.

VMI is the only student body that fought a battle as an independent unit. The cadets were called up to be held in reserve as the Yankees plundered the Shenandoah Valley. The line faltered, and General Breckinridge (former VP) is quoted as saying, "Put in the boys, and may God forgive me". The cadets swung the Battle of New Market. My great-grandfather was one of those cadets, and his cousin was one of 10 killed in the battle.

VMI has a special place in my heart. I served with VMI grads and considered it briefly, but being the oldest of three boys, the out-of-state tuition was too much. Besides, I drank the Aggie Kool-Aid and have never been more proud.

I was contacted by the archivst and invited to attend the 150th anniversay of New Market Day. It was Aggie Muster on steroids.

These commie politicians who hate the military and anything with honor need to leave VMI alone. Any changes they make will be hard to reverse.

My father graduated from VMI in 68 and is a proud alum.

I almost went there in 97 (that's the year they went coed, btw). When a female in my high school class was admitted and received a scholarship over me (despite having poorer academic performance and fewer extracurriculars), I decided to go to A&M and never looked back. You could call that woke (before it was a thing), but it really annoyed my father and me, to say the least.

I don't know much about this current issue beyond what's been posted, but it doesn't surprise me in the least, since this is the direction the state has been heading for a long time.

My favorite thing about that era in the late 90s was that VMI alumni would say things like "Women at VMI? What's next, men at UVA?!"
