I have all the respect in the world for Franklin and what he has done, but Tootsie was the original and never received the personal fame (outside of the barbecue aficionados in Texas). Glad she is getting featured on this show.
I remember having the brisket at Snows for the first time, and after having eaten at all the other great barbecue places in Texas, I was shocked that brisket could be elevated to that level. It was in a category of its own. Of course now there are places all over the state that produce meat of a similar level, but at the time it felt groundbreaking.

2. Authentic and organic marketing through knowledge sharing, networking and a general love the food culture of Texas. He is a generally nice dude who will talk to anyone about BBQ at any time.

Tootsie makes equally awesome Q but her location and hours of operation prevented the mainstream fame that Franklin has achieved.

This. I think Franklin Barbecue starting out during the rise of the social media age was huge. And, as you said, the fact that he comes across as really genuine and likable only helped add to his fame.

i haven't been able to make it to snow's yet. i really want to go while tootsie is still there, but i'm guessing the wait and lines are going to be ass for the foreseeable future.

They are doing shipping orders but are not open for their normal Saturday serving.
Any different than the PBS series that is on Youtube? He did a pretty thorough job with techniques in those videos.

The MasterClass crew came to Franklin and they recorded it all in about 36 hours. He said it was pretty grueling. The quality of the cinematography is incredible.
The PBS is more organic but also good.
Content is similar for both and the same as his book

They are currently closed. 95% of their customers come from out of that community, and in addition to Ms. Tootsie, they have several employees over the age of 60, including Kerry himself.Willy Wonka said:schmendeler said:

I'm going to watch this on the plane today. Looking forward to it. That said, I'm not the biggest fan of their bbq, but I do love them for who they are. I'll go anytime I can.

I never knew what happened to Hershey. I always felt it wasn't my place to ask. But I do remember a trip out there one day and while everyone talked to Tootsie, I just sat and bullshat with him for several minutes. Nothing deep or anything, but he seemed nice and I was sad to see him go.
I'm going to watch the other shows on my next flight. I'm really interested in Mayan BBQ and I've always liked Rodney Scott.

As to franklin, others nailed it above. He was just so refreshing when he came on the scene and was like "hey, no secrets here. Great BBQ required experience and hard work. Here is what works for me."
