Recipe (this makes 4 servings, but easy to make 1 bunch of asparagus feed 5, just add another serving of the other ingrediants)

1 bunch fresh asparagus. On the thinner side works better.
1 package of sandwich meat ham. Thin sliced works best. Oscar Mayer or the like.
4 slices of bacon.
4 mozzarella sticks. Aka string cheese.

Assembling is easy. You basically arrange the asparagus around the cheese, wrap the ham around the asparagus, wrap the bacon around the ham, and secure the roll with toothpicks. The ingredients have plenty of salt, so no seasonings needed.

We cook these in the oven at 350 for 20 to 25 minutes. They can also be cooked on a grill, just keep them rolling and take them off before the cheese starts to escape too much.

It's a nice serving of vegetables that your kids will beg you for. Just cook them when the rest of the meal isn't that hearty.

If you have younger kids, one of these is a nice meal, especially if you throw in a dinner roll or some other carb. Feed them this and cook you and your wife/husband a nice steak to go with it.

For teenagers, these things usually get eaten faster than the meat at our house. They will fill up tummies with good food without breaking the bank.

The bacon is helpful because it keeps things together. Tanya, you could probably make do with large pieces of sandwich meat and more toothpicks. The bacon is there more as a piece of structure than for flavor. But, let's be honest, bacon never made any dish worse.

We have substituted other types of lunch meat for the ham. Roast beef, turkey, sliced chorizo, prosciutto, bologna. It all works, but the only one that is disappointing a bit is the turkey.

Anyways, hope someone finds this useful. It is my wife's own little invention, I think, but so simple I wouldn't be surprised to see it somewhere else.

Olive oil, salt and pepper. Grill until nicely charred.
My kids have eaten asparagus this way since they could start eating solid food.

Sounds good but it's more like a serving of pork and cheese with a side of asparagus.

I throw it in the pan after seating a steak with a little more butter and the garlic and rosemary/thyme from the steak. At the last second toss with a little Tony chacheres of I'm feeling like 'spicy' asparagus.

I use proscuitto instead of bacon or ham for the guys.

I just roast mine with olive oil, lemon, and garlic.

If it works to get them to eat veggies, cool.
Personally though, I still add a salad with it. But I am veggie centric

Yeah. Heavy side.

But, you have to start somewhere. Better than a big spoon of mashed potatoes or corn, right?

Generally speaking, yes. With all that protein you wouldn't need a main course... that dish itself would/ should be the main. I like meals like that tho. We do zoodles (spiralized zucchini) regularly. There's no need for a veggie side when you do.

My diet thing is no carbs unless you need to get taller.

Protein: two thumbs up
Fat: keeps you full and free from eating sugar
Fiber: fill up that belly
Carbs: you better be ready to run two miles
Sugar: wellllll.........it's nice. Every once in a while is ok. Like a fancy bracelet that makes the other girls go "oooooo"

We have fat children because, sadly, this would probably be a healthy meal for most kids now a days. Asparagus and cheese wrapped in ham and bacon is probably better than chicken nuggets and Mac and cheese.

Our toddler eats everything! Simple sauted asparagus...no problem. In fact whenever we're cooking she always hangs around asking to smell any herbs and spices that go into the food, and making sure we put plenty of seasoning on it. She'll point to the pan and say something like "more paprika on it" or "garlic daddy?"

My 2 year old loves asparagus. Not need to dress it up.

I love asparagus too, but unfortunately, I'm allergic to it.

My kids love them. We typically just clean / snap then quickly boil, then toss around with olive oil and some seasoning to serve.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

Tell them that if they eat a bunch of them their pee will stink. Our daughter has eaten asparagus since she started eating regular food. She ate more when we told her about the pee thing, and get her friends to eat them that way too.

Just tell them they're not getting anything else and if they don't mind being hungry then they don't have to eat it but if they wanna eat then it's gonna be whatever is on their plate.

Cooking dinner on a weeknight is a big enough pain. I'm not making two different meals of whatever you'll eat.

OK...Rant over

This solves any food-related argument. At least for one side. The kid will eat when he wants to eat. If he skips a dinner, he'll be okay.

I'm more talking to myself, but I think it still applies.

Back in about 98 I was taking a leak in the chem building next to my PhD advisor. We'd been pissing for 10 or so seconds in silence and he just says out loud, " you need to lay off the ****ing asparagus". We finished in silence.

I have nothing else to add.

The only way that I'll eat asparagus is stir fried.

Stir fry some bite sized chicken pieces. Add asparagus spears cut to about 1 inch lengths and go for another couple of minutes. Sprinkle on sriacha sauce to taste and stir fry for another minute (this goes easier if wearing a covid mask). Serve over rice.

Toss in olive oil. Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pspper. Stick in a 375 degree oven for 7 minutes, shaking every 90 seconds ~ 2 min. If they don't like it, they're marxist commies needing to be put down. Sorry yoi chose poorly.

The way to get your kids to eat asparagus is make them some green beans because you assume your 1.5 yo will not eat asparagus. Then they will grab asparagus off your plate and scarf it down...
