If you like to give your eggnog 6 months to age, now is the time.
Thanks for the reminder.

Making a quadruple batch today. Hope most of it makes it to Christmas.

Getting ready to do my batch, usually do it around the start of the football season.

Wondering about changing up the alton brown recipe a little. What does the brandy/cognac add? Not something I ever use except for the occasion sauce. Could you add a different bourbon, which to me seems to have more complex flavors, for a different level of flavor notes?

Not looking to reduce the alcohol, we like that part. Just wondering how different combinations might work out. But not necessarily wanting to make multiple batches.

I think the recipe is pretty forgiving when it comes to the alcohols, within reason. If you don't want to use brandy or cognac you could use Irish whiskey, a mellow scotch, or another type of rum, all would add different characteristics. And yes I did say scotch. There's a variation of a White Russian called an aggravation that uses scotch instead of vodka. You don't want to use something overpowering but scotch could work as long as it's the right one. I made a batch last year and used Mr. Black instead of cognac/brandy but I prefer the original after trying it. It wasn't bad by any means, but not as tasty IMO. You could use different bourbons for sure, you could use a wheated bourbon, or rye whiskey as well.

I've made Alton's recipe more times than I can remember. I usually switch the alcohols up quite frequently. I've migrated back to the original recipe for a change. Probably my favorite though was I switched out the Brandy for Crown. And for the rum I always use Appleton Estate.

Made my 2023 batch today!

Went with Maker's Mark to double bourbon. Still added a half dose of cognac. Also added a bit of clove and allspice.

Couldn't find my 32 oz Ball jars, so my packaging is a bit sloppy.

Fall and aggie football may comense!

Made mine tonight. Kept it simple with the recipe and just used whatever I had on hand.

The only recipe you'll ever need.

Did my first attempt at this tonight. Cut the recipe in half as I didn't want or need that much egg nog on hand. But the thought of this drink has always intrigued me.

I had no cognac and didn't feel like buying that just for this, so I just upped the rum and bourbon. The drink tasted surprisingly smooth for just mixing it. I might do some rum or bourbon floaters in the jars depending on how they taste in a month's time.

Regardless, it was damn tasty. The freshly grated nutmeg is always a game changer with egg nog.

It's time! Plenty of people already poking me when the first batch is going to get made. Need to get started for the Thanksgiving batch.

Everytime this thread gets brought back to the top, I have to take a sample of my supply that should just be happily aging.

I remember my first year making it. I would crave it so would take a little sip because I couldn't stand it anymore. That little sip turned into a gulp. Couldn't get any of it to last past a week or two. I'm better disciplined now, but that was rough.

Made Alton brown's recipe tonight. Meant to do it a long time ago, but kept forgetting to pick stuff up.

Looking forward to giving it a try in a couple weeks.

Made a batch on July 4th and have been patiently waiting until Thanksgiving to crack open the first bottle. Every month or so I have to give it a shake.

... Yes. Keep a bit of it for next year too. 2 year aged is where it's at

Just saw this thread the other day, never made egg nog before but normally buy some for the holidays. So we made two, half batches of Alton juice, one with Wild Turkey 101 and one with Old Grandad 114. Thought we'd see which one we prefer. Tastes fine so far, but we'll check them out at Christmas and see how they are doing.

Apparently this years attempt was too strong. I don't hate it but the peanut gallery is not a fan...

When did you make it? It's going to mellow quite a bit in a month.

Agreed. By no means is this that harsh of a beverage.

It may be a bit stronger than indicated In the original recipe. Wife will drink old fashions and straight whisky and bourbon. So she is not a sissy about her liquor.

OK, so I made 2 batches this summer and yesterday I drank about 12 oz in one sitting. Does eggnog tear up anyone else's stomach? Last night was not fun. Ya'll have any insight? I'm assuming it was the eggnog as nothing else I ate was out of the normal and I read an article saying that the heavy cream, milk, and associated fat can do a number on some people. I now have a bunch of eggnog I'm afraid to drink.
