TX Passed CA as #1 Beer State in 2020 With Nearly 1-Mil-Bbl, 4.6% Gain

This is big, shape-shifting development. Texas passed California as the #1 beer shipments state in US in 2020, even tho CA has 10 mil more people (roughly 39 mil to 29 mil). But TX trend much healthier during pandemic period. Texas shipments jumped 943,000 bbls, 4.6% in 2020 to 21.4 million barrels, according to current estimates of shipments to 50 states from the Beer Institute. At same time, CA shipments declined 325K bbls, 1.5% to 20.9 mil bbls. So TX over a half mil bbls ahead. Total US shipments up 200K bbls, 0.1%. Trends ranged from 20% decline in Washington DC (but "just" a 74K-bbl drop) to 11% gain in Oklahoma, up 144K bbls.

Florida also posted big shipments gain. Up 537K bbls, 4% in 2020. But big states in northeast and midwest took a hit. NY shipments down 535,000 bbls, 5.2%. Pennsylvania down 361,000 bbls, 4.4%. Illinois down 236,000 bbls, 2.9%. And OH down 262K, 3.3%. Those 4 states plus CA lost almost as many bbls as TX and FL gained.
