Good way to keep tabs on expiring stuff in pantry?

It's randomly organized and looks clean now. Still pull out random things (mixed nuts, almonds, and snacks) that have gone bad.

I'm thinking of some chalkboard paint on the inside of the door and devising a system.... Better ideas/solutions?

Stop buying **** you won't use is the best system.

Yep. Given that those are all packaged goods, they've been in there for a long time to go bad on you. Be better at shopping

Unless you live alone, that system you planned will fail the first time your spouse and children visit the pantry.
However, there's a great movie called "sleeping with the enemy" that you might enjoy for some suggestions. That guy never had a problem with expired food.

Spices don't really go bad, they just get less potent.

Face it and rotate. Old grocery store skill still comes in handy.

My MIL had some old seasoning like oregano (leafy not salt / pepper) that she got out to use at Thanksgiving a couple of years ago. Wife asks her where she got it. She said she thinks she has had it since they lived in Jersey... which they moved from in 1995.

We replaced it during next grocery trip. Then they decided to remove other items that were a bit passed their due date.

On the other hand, I used a container of dried potato flakes over a period of about 10 years from college through single adulthood. They was fine.

In all seriousness not buying in bulk, like suggested, saves on waste.

I would also suggest that every so often spend a week eating from your pantry and freezer.

We do this four to six times a year. Typically before we go out of town. It can get creative towards the end of the week, but you don't waste food.

As for spices, they do get old. Maybe not bad, but it's ok to read the labels and replace from time to time.

Seriously, how often do you use Turmeric?

Not much of a system, but more of a mindset.

I don't think I've ever thrown out a pantry item that has gone 'bad', outside of maybe some bread products.

All that stuff in there doesn't really go 'bad'. Not like milk/meat/fruit/veggies. Nuts? is this a joke? What are they like 5 years old?
