Any of you guys have one? I don't drink much coffee at all but the wife does. Seems to be a solid choice...but would like to hear what you coffee drinkers think.

I have a buddy who has one and swears by it. He and his wife both used to be all into different pour over methods and maybe still do chemex here and there, but pretty much rock the moccamaster daily.

This is my experience.

My in-laws have one - I was not impressed and will keep using my chemex. I didn't realize it was a high-end coffee-maker. Tasted the same as a Mr. Coffee to me...

I'd say using the same beans measured out properly, you'll get a better cup from pour over than you will from the MM, but the MM delivers excellent drip coffee in minimal time with minimal effort. My biggest disappointment with the MM was that so much of it was made of plastic. I expected a higher quality, more substantial machine for the price. It does a nice job, though.

edit: ... and similar to heddleston and tikka's comments, i use it daily. The moccamaster produces good enough coffee that I almost never feel the need to pull out the Chemex and do the extra work.

Agree. However, one plus about the MM is that all pieces are easily replaceable. I haven't had to do that in over 3 years, but good to know I can.

Simply put, you CAN make a better cup with a good amount of effort, but it is rarely worth it.

I've had one for 8 years and I love it. Easy to use and clean, fast, makes great coffee. About 30 seconds into the brew cycle, I give the grounds a stir to make sure they are evenly soaked and distributed, but not really necessary and probably just my OCD. Highly recommend.

I've got this one: Moccamaster CDGT

I used an old Zojirushi drip before it died and replaced it with the Moccamaster, as well as pour-over, french press and an Aeropress.

My favorite cup comes out of the Aeropress. But the Moccamaster makes a cup that's 85% of the enjoyment and completely hands off, and it makes 3-4 cups at a time and the insulated carafe holds temp for a few hours.

As much as I love my manual devices, the convenience can't be beat when I just want a quick good cup.

I've also had a good experience with my MM. It makes a really consistent cup of coffee and seems like it is built to last.

I'll give the slightly counter opinion I think they're overrated.

I've had one for a year. I mainly just make a couple of cups at a time, and I don't think it's great at that. I previously had a kitchen aid (don't remember the model, but it was an SCAA approved one), and I think it was at least as good for less than half the price. Replaced it because we moved, and the place where we set up coffee (butler's pantry) had less space between counter and upper cabinets, so it didn't fit.

It dispenses the water fast and over a small area, so I get tunneling unless I manually turn off the flow from the basket, making it work like a manual clever dropper.

I'm not really a fan of insulated carafes for normal use. Pain to clean, as there's a lip that keeps them from dripping out completely, and you either have to preheat it, or the coffee cools to heat it. When I'm making a single mug in the morning, I have to rig it with a wine cork to trigger the safety to make it brew into my mug, to avoid messing with the carafe.

I've been using pour over and my clever dripper for the last few weeks instead, and both make a better cup. I just bought a chemex ottomatic to replace it. Figure it will serve dual purpose to just use as a chemex when I want to go that route.

Hoffmann's coffee opinions are not inscrutable (I ended up not liking his Aeropress technique at all), but he is very honest and tries to be thorough in his reviews. He loves the OXO in that it's more bang for your buck, but really all of the ones he reviews here make really really good coffee. I think one of the biggest things in Technivorm's favor are its simplicity and that they sell replacement parts.

Pour over will always give you more control, but sometimes or all the times some folks just want to push a button and that's fine. These will let you do that and still give you a really really good cup of coffee.
