I'm looking for a good reliable and relatively inexpensive option for lamb. I know there are some somewhat crazy little lamb farms that think they're selling gold and not meat. I've been eating a lot of lamb lately and heb/Whole Foods is hit or miss on cuts like shoulder and even shanks. I've been going to a halal place here in SA but it's on the other side of town.

I'd consider buying a whole lamb or halves if that's cheaper and an option.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Those slaughter prices seem high to me. As high as just going to heb or local market. Or am I wrong?

That guy in the link (wai3 gotgoats) couldn't be a nicer, more upstanding guy.

I had talked to him about buying a lamb but he told me that the lambs he had were going to end up netting about 30lbs of meat. My price/lb was going to end up over $10/lb so I backed out. He totally got it and agreed it was high.

I'm kinda in your boat, I'm looking for lamb and trying to figure out if HEB and Costco are the way to go.

Costco Business Center in Dallas has decent pricing and selection on whole lamb or cuts by the large case. I haven't been in a while and don't recall the pricing exactly. In Texas they only have this one and another in the Houston area.

I was part of the buy listed. In the end, I wish I'd bought a whole lamb. However, it was an interesting experience. In the end though, if you're looking for inexpensive that simply means you need to raise, slaughter and butcher yourself.

Due to inflation, the costs of everything is going up. Adding in the fuel to get from W Houston to CS and back, I would have been better off buying from HEB. Lots of little factors involved if the bottom price is your largest factor.

You're also getting more cuts that you'll never see at HEB.

True, I was offered a cut list and have some interesting things to try. Overall, was a good experience.

If I were to do it again I'd try to work with more people to cut fuel costs down. Had a beer at the Chicken, so I can discount my time. The sad part is I can't get my folks to be interested in lamb.

So all that being said, if anyone in Houston is ever interested in some sort of group buy, I'd be in.

I buy several lambs every year from a 4H/FFA exhibitor. Best way to get high quality and you can typically write a third of it off.

In this scenario, would I have to arrange for th butchering, etc?? Is the price after the write off reasonable? It seems like the bids on those animals seems to be high…but I have zero experience in that area. Just see the stories on tv of a kid who sells an animal that pays for his college tuition.

Lots of 4H/FFA shows have"freezer sales" for animals that don't place well enough to be in the "premium" sale. Usually they're market price or thereabouts. Typically the sale or 4H/FFA chapter arranges for processing and you just pick it up when it's ready

Whole Goat and pigs as well

Lamb loin chops (T-bones) may be one of my favorite easy meals. They've seen to have gotten quite pricet at HEB, though.

I paid $20 for three t-bone chops last week. A boneless leg was $70. Maybe I should start looking for a stock show project that didn't make the sale.
