Or other ideas…

I kind of looking for a coffee bean grinder because I love cold brew during the hotter days/months…but as Alton Browns says, never buy a single use gadget and I am in agreement.

I bought a mortar and pestle, but I know I won't get an even grind…

Any ideas?

If you are making cold brew, grind size doesn't really matter. So just get a blade grinder and use it for while spices as well.

I thought course grind was the best for cold brew?

It is which is why I said size doesn't matter. I probably should have been more precise and said "grind size consistency doesn't matter"

The big reason blade grinders get a bad rap is due to how inconsistent they are.

Not a cold brew aficionado so it's another story if grind consistency doesn't matter as much. But, fwiw, a coffee grinder is one of Alton's few recommended single taskers

ETA: either way, I probably wouldn't use a blade grinder for coffee that I was also using for spices.

The idea of not having a good grinder was so foreign to me, it didn't even occur to me. I was just trying to identify something that could sort of grind coffee and do something else.

In all honesty, if you are making cold brew just use a bag of preground

This is probably wrong in many ways, but I have used my cheap blender for this exact purpose. I can usually grind a third pound at a time. It won't be perfect but who cares? I need to get my old toddy coffee maker out and make some now.

Alton did an episode on Good Eats about coffee and I believe this was the grinder he used. It is also the one I have had for a few years and it is great. I make cold brew about 90% of the time but also use this for my drip machine.

Alton also recommended taking your old coffee grinder and repurposing it as a spice grinder, which works great BTW. I got a new, quieter coffee grinder for Father's Day last year from my son who's bed was on the opposite side of the kitchen wall from where I ground the coffee every morning. :-) Now I grind a lot of my own spices now with the old one.
