In-laws are in charge of the mains (bird and dressing) every other year, so I make sure that we have something green and not casserole -- roasted brussels and sauteed green beans. Sometimes I tip my cap to my grandmother and make an old school cold pea salad (with bacon, cheddar, Miracle Whip). I might pre-make a pan of crawfish dressing this year.
dude, that old school pea salad is money... no one makes it any more in either side of my family.

Same here -- it went away for decades and I brought it back.

So how about cranberry sauce ?

chopped fresh cranberry's
mandarin orange with slices pealed then chopped
chopped pineapple
chopped fresh jalapeno
chopped sweet onion
small amount of chopped cilantro
envelope of cherry jello or two depending on how much of the above
sugar, salt and pepper to taste

Add the amount of water called for on the jello packet to a pot, add the ingredients other than the jello powder and bring to a hard simmer
add jello packet. stir well
transfer to glass dish and refrigerate until jelled

Thanksgiving is my least favorite holiday because I despise the traditional food. Got married in 2020 and have done Shrimp and Grits the last two years with bourbon bread pudding.

So much better than a dry turkey, a spiral cut ham, and a bunch of casseroles with cream of whatever in them.

I get it about the casserole, but do you (or your family) just suck at cooking turkey? It's really good if done properly. Perfect 154 inside the breast, super juicy with tender thighs, darkly browned on the broiled skin.

People tell me every year that my Turkey is the best they've ever had. I'd still never cook one again if not for tradition. It's a hell of a lot of work and still can't hold up against something like Shrimp and Grits. You could do nothing more than salt a rib roast and it's going to be a hundred times better than the best Turkey ever served.

Cranberries have enough natural pectin in them that you don't need jell-o for it to set to loosely set. So unless you're trying to put it into a mold, you don't need it. Personally, I like it with just cranberries, sugar, orange peel and orange juice, from an orange and a pinch of salt. You can add a cinnamon stick if you want some of that flavor. Cook it until the cranberries burst, and pour it into a bowl.

One Grandma recipe that I'm going to let go extinct is "congealed salad". Sounds like something you discover during an autopsy.

Another old school one that we would get if we went out (to the Stagecoach Inn) was tomato aspic. No thanks.

Don't you think you're being a little oversensitive.....it's all in fun so please take it that way. There are more than just a few people on here that are pretty good cooks. Then there are some that want to tell other cooks what they are doing wrong in their cooking. I was just kind of following along in that vein. Sorry if I hit a sore spot. I have no idea what you're talking about with your last sentence. Could you explain?

This response is complete gibberish.

Jalapeno, onion, cilantro, cranberry, and <checks notes> cherry jell-o doesn't sound all that appetizing to me. If you and your family like it, go on with your bad self. I was offering my recipe as well in case someone wants an alternative to yours.

My grandma 's cranberry sauce

12 ounce bag of fresh cranberries
3/4 cup orange juice
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg ground
1/2 pinch of ground cloves
1 teaspoon Pure Mexican Vanilla
2 teaspoon Triple Sec liquor
2 tablespoon orange zest

Combine cranberries, orange juice & brown sugar in pot. Bring to a boil to cranberry's pop stirring as needed. Remove from heat and stir in rest of the ingredients.

Thanksgiving is when we have a big family reunion. So will have a lot of over for that time. So why there is always a lot of food. I usually do all the BBQ stuff since I have the big reverse flow stick burner pit. I'll also do the Pinto Beans, German Potato Salad & German Red Cabbage since I know my German Grandfather's recipes.

Will you share recipes for all the sides? My email is in profile if that makes it easier to share.

I'm guess I'm the exception, but I like a good roasted turkey and my wife's family dressing recipe.
Me too, it's not like I get turkey and dressing the rest of the year. We'll typically have some non-traditional appetizers and such alongside the rest of the normal fare.

Yeah, I crave the bird and dressing because we just don't do it any other time. I always mean to do a TG in July and fry a bird, but always forget.

Buy a can of Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce.
Open Can
Slice

My wife makes homemade stuff. She buys me a can of the good stuff.

Make the homemade sauce and strain through a sieve. Add some unflavored gelatin, pour it in a jar, and boom. Homemade canned style that's light years better than ocean spray

You're insufferable.

He literally said, "I like the canned stuff best", but you still have to suggest some way to make it from scratch with more steps that is somehow 'better'.

Why do you have to tell people how to cook? Why can't you just let them like what they like? Why do you have this need to control what others do?

Raise the bar that's fine. I like traditional and non-traditional t-giving foods. Give me fancy or not fancy, but I like the canned cranberry sauce.

Regardless, the best part of thanksgiving foods are left over dinner roll sandwiches the next day.

We personally divide the labor pretty well. Everyone makes 1-2 things. I smoke a brined and spatchcocked turkey and make the gravy. MIL makes the dressing, wife makes the green beans and homemade cranberry sauce, etc. Someone chills and opens my cranberries.
FIDO*98*

Let me clarify then. In my experience, most people who prefer canned prefer it due to the consistency and texture, myself included. With very little work, you can serve a 'gelled style' homemade sauce that is vastly superior to Ocean Spray cans. I like to serve things that are homemade for special occasions and don't open cans or boxes for Thanksgiving. I didn't get where I am in life by settling for mediocrity. Sorry if that spills over into my cooking.
