I hope this is the right board for this. We are visiting Ft. Worth for the first time in 30 years in a couple of weeks. Would love to get some recs on the best places to eat. We will be staying near Dickie's Arena and plan to visit the Stockyards one day. Specifically looking for food that is not done well in in the PacNW (chicken fried steak, BBQ and TexMex). Any recs would be greatly appreciated.!

BBQ - Heim, Angelo's
Fried steak/seafood - Lucille's or Michael's
Tex Mex - La Playa Maya, 'New Mex' - Tinie's

You can also try the metroplex forum.

If you go to Angelo's for BBQ after 30 years of not being in Fort Worth then you need to poop slap yourself.

I live here in FtW...

BBQ:
Panther City (made TX Monthly Top 10)
Heim
Hurtado

Stockyards Area:
Hookers Grill - burgers/chicken fried steak
Provender Hall
97 West inside Hotel Drover
Sidesaddle Saloon for small bites/drinks
Second Rodeo Brewing
No good BBQ in stockyards AND DO NOT EAT AT Joe T's.

Tex-Mex:
Paco's (Sundance Square or Magnolia)
Enchiladas Ole (mole is their specialty)
Mi Cocina (Mambo Taxi's and Tex-Mex)
Masero (Clearkfork area)
Meso Maya (Hulen)

I'm not well versed on chicken fried steak, but do agree with the Reata suggestion for "southwestern" food. It is downtown.

Near Dickies Arena:
Taco Heads - kind of upscale tacos and Tex-Mex
Michael's Cuisine
Hotel Drye has a cool lobby bar that could work for a drink or two
DO NOT GO TO RAILHEAD BBQ near Dickies Arena
Maestro Tacos - excellent birria tacos and margaritas (I'd suggest this for casual lunch/supper)
Don Artemio - really fancy Mexican food their spot in Mexico named one of the top restaurants in Mexico; get the cabrito and also get the nopales tacos for an appetizer

Interesting…a FW food thread that's gone a whole day without a Joe Ts debate.

If you haven't already, you undoubtedly will hear about Joe T Garcia's, a Tex Mex place near the stockyards. It is an institution in FW and draws polarizing opinions. It is a fun place to go, as it is set in the gardens of an old hacienda and has a great atmosphere for patio dining. The food is mediocre. I know locals who think it's great and eat there multiple times a month when the weather is nice, and others who say it is garbage. The truth is in the middle.

ETA did not see matsui's "do not eat" disclaimer

Funny. Count me as one of the locals that loves the atmosphere, likes the enchilada plate option, and hates the line.

I still miss Horseshoe Hill. Was always a must stop anytime I was in Fort Worth, and still to this day the best chicken fried steak I've ever had.

I should also say that Matsui did a great job with that list. One good Tex Mex option he omitted was Uncle Julio's. Specializes in grilled stuff and has my favorite fajitas in town.

Absolutely. Uncle Julio's is some of the worst Tex-mex I've ever had. Can't believe it's still in business. Hell, I'd go to Mexican Inn over Uncle Julio's.

wow, never had any d- day issues there and we've been eating there since the early 90's (sister waited tables there summers while at A&M).

the only people I see leaving mexican inn on 8th are overweight hospital workers usually smoking

La Banqueta on hemphill is the real deal

Man, as someone who grew up there but hasn't lived in FW for 16 years, I've missed out. Here's a few other random spots, more lunch than sit down meal:

Tokyo Cafe (5 min from Dickie's)
Zeke's (Fried seafood)
Brewed (bar/coffee/brunch)

Man I haven't been to Zeke's in forever, but it definitely used to have some of the best fried fish (and mushrooms) I've ever had.

I'm in line for Joe T Garcia's right now. I've been a few time, but the line has never seemed worth it. I'm 1hr-15 in, so this better be worth it this time.

Edit: it was, indeed, worth it.

Went there last week and it was great. Best Mexican in FW, no. Great atmosphere with decent food and a great margarita? Yes.

+1 for Reata. Whenever you can go is the right time. Great lunch and even better dinner. Great bar as well. Rooftop if weather is nice. The menu is just fantastic for a lost Texan coming from the pnw.

One of my earliest memories of a restaurant was Joe T's from almost 50 years ago, so I'll never knock it.

Do you Fort Worth old timers remember a hole in the wall place that dusted their chips with chili powder, had awesome margaritas and queso? Was it Campo Verde? Internet says used to be in the Fort but that location gone. I remember going there when we got caught in a unexpected freeze on a work delivery trip 30+ years ago.

Campo Verde was where Camp Bowie and 183 intersect. You could be thinking of that. Longer shot, but just down from there, on the traffic circle was a place called Casa Guillermo. It was next to Edelweiss. Dark inside with carved wood furniture. I was never old enough to drink a Marg there but the chili powered chips are very distinct to me. We went there a ton. It probably closed in the early 90's.

I'll bet that is it, because that's exactly what I remember it looking like.

Learned something new today. Fort Worth born & raised and we lived in Ridgmar for a few years before moving to Berkeley neighborhood in '80 and do not remember Casa Guillermo. Interesting. Will ask the parents if they remember. Definitely remember Edelweiss but haven't been in probably 30 yrs.

In the burger category, go to Kincaid's. Best hamburger in the metroplex

Dutch's is a great burger near tcu, and I'd love to know where railhead touched the poster above, it's mearly fine and you could do so much worse.

I don't have one. Just know that Kincaid's isn't the best burger. Just a few that are better IMO are Rodeo Goat, Fred's, Dutch's, and Hooker's grill. Hopdoddy's too, although they're a chain.

Everybody has a list especially if you've lived in FW at least 5yrs. I'm curious to see your Mexican & BBQ list.
I'm also a fan of all your burger choices but I'm concerned about Dutches since the last handful of times our family has eaten our food has come out not hot. Lou is another wheeler dealer that likes to throw his money around, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't
