Thought I could add plenty to the stuff ruined by parents/in-laws thread, thought I'd start some new thread and give props where it is due.

Both my MIL and FIL are pretty good cooks. Things they do great that I didn't have a lot of exposure to prior to marriage:

Bacon Marmalade for Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
Homemade biscuits
Grilling on a Hasty Bake grill (we almost exclusively sous vide/cast iron, so the occasional grilled cut of meat is awesome)
Pt

My mom:
Corn Dip (mayo, jalapenos, cheese, chilies, etc.)

My mother makes THE BEST Argentinian beef empanadas. Like they make them in Buenos Aires - with hard-boiled eggs, olives, and raisins. She also makes an awesome "guiso" (or Italian beef stew). OMG, I love that stuff. She also makes a really good Serenata, which is Codfish Salad with Root Vegetables. It sounds weird, but it's great. She also makes good alfajores, but they are a HUGE project and we've only done them a couple of times.

I loved my mother-in-law's spaghetti sauce. She passed away so I'll never have it again. She did not have a recipe. She started with a big jar of sauce but then made it her own by adding all sorts of delicious goodness to it. She also made really good fried chicken. I didn't know how to cook when I got married. I wanted to make foods my husband liked so I pestered my MIL incessantly to learn to cook the foods my husband loves.

My Aubelo (mom's father) made the world's best flan. My sister took up the banner when he died and now she does it. Doesn't exactly fall into the parent's category but it deserved a mention.

nothing from my in laws stand out. my wife and brother in laws would disagree with me to the end of time. They think both are excellent cooks. While the food isn't terrible, most to me is a lot of grease and a lot of butter. I normally feel like **** after every meal they make.

Father-in-law loves nothing more than grilling a thick filet (even in the dead of winter), sometimes adding scallops. Filet always cooked to medium rare. Wine rack is full when we arrive, yet he still takes me to buy more wine and beer when we get there, and generally refuses to let me pay for anything.

Beer, wine, and cocktails are a given on any trip up there.

Lots of late nights sitting around the fire outside after being on the lake all day.

If the winters weren't so brutal, I'd be inclined to move up there.

My side of the family is generally the better cooks (2 of my brothers are chefs). That being said, my wife is French and I've had some amazing culinary experiences traveling there to visit.

MIL makes great Korean Bbq, but I can get that lots of places. Her fresh cucumber and apple kimchi is AWESOME though.

While this is t necessarily my favorite, I give my FIL props as he's become known as the neighborhood chicken salad guy. He makes a chicken salad once a week and gets asked to bring chicken salad sandwiches to every function. A neighbor is moving away and lamented not being able to have his chicken salad any longer. I FaceTimed my FIL the other day and there he was in the kitchen with said neighbor teaching him how to make his famous chicken salad!!

He's about as good a FIL as a man could possibly ask for and I love the guy to death. Props to him!

My MIL makes some fantastic food and some absolutely awful food. There is no in between. Lasagna is terrible. Eggs Benedict with perfectly poached eggs and from scratch hollandaise are amazing. Pork chops or any cut of beef are awful. Fried chicken is amazing. Most of her casseroles are awful.

My FIL is an enigma. He was raised in a more well to do family (and was an investment banker for 20 years) and his food preferences show it. But he's learned to cook those things because my MIL won't. He makes escargot in butter and shallots with homemade rosemary bread knots. His Beef Wellington is great. Fresh pasta and from scratch "gravy" are great.

He can also mix a drink with the best of them, especially martinis. But then he broke down and started making moonshine out of his shed like a hillbilly and I'll be damned if it isn't some of the best stuff I've ever had. He has now even built and torched his own barrel to age some of it. Too much time on his hands in retirement.

My MIL comes over and occupies my kids so I can cook up something. Best I got. Their favorite restaurant is Luby's, so flavor isn't their forte. FIL used to show up 5 minutes before the food was served. I made some comments about feeding stray dogs and now he shows up a little earlier.

I complained about my in-laws scratching our cookware in the other thread, but on the flip side they make some outstanding traditional Cantonese dishes (from HK, still live there) when they come into town.
