It's a bit of science and art. It's simple but can easily be done wrong...

First step is to determine what brewing method you are going to use, here are some examples:

Ingredients needed:
  • Fresh roasted arabica coffee - Coffee quality is always very important.
  • Best if you have a home coffee grinder - To grind fresh your coffee.
  • Filtered or spring water.
  • A gram scale to weigh your coffee and water.

Roasted beans lose their flavor and aroma rapidly after roasting and grinding. To obtain the best flavor and aroma, purchase whole beans that have a recent roasting date, best within the past week, but not older than a month. Don't grind the beans until you're ready to brew.

Invest in a burr grinder if you can, they run for about $150.00. The motion of a blade grinder produces uneven-sized grounds, while a burr grinder uses abrasive, cylindrical surfaces to grind coffee beans into a uniform grind size. Burr grinders also have different settings, so you get the right consistency according to the brewing method you're using.

Spring water or carbon filter water works best. Don't go overboard with distill water or reverse osmosis, it will provide you with a weak tasting or watered down flavor cup of coffee due to the lack of minerals in the water. Best flavor and aroma require water temperature to between 195 and 205 F, depending on brew method.

Weigh your coffee and water. A gram scale will help you measure the precise amount of coffee and water to ensure the perfect ratio when brewing. Golden Rule is 1:18 (18 grams of water per 1 gram of coffee.
