Have any of you compared the standard 80 proof G4 blanco (I have had and like this one) with the higher proof G4 blanco. If so, what are your impressions?

What's a good anejo tequila for making an old fashioned? I'm fond of Lalo for a ranch water, but I want to try making a tequila old fashioned.

Has anyone tried Montagave? They've got good reviews with an anejo coming out. They recently released the Montagave Blanco 'Las Rocas' which is finished in a concrete egg. Curious to if anyone has tried it?

I've had several bottles, you want the montagave heritage. I had their anejo which they don't seem to make anymore, it's good but not special.

The heritage is phenomenal, it is very unique.

I have not had las rocas yet.

G4 Reposado makes an incredible Mexican Old Fashioned. I know you mentioned anejo, but this one just works for me.

That might be the next purchase. I ended up with El Tequileno and it's good, just a little too sweet.

I picked up the Cascahuin Tahona for my birthday tequila. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint.

Picked up Terralta at our local Specs. Been searching for this one as it come from the same NOM as G4, which I really enjoy. They use deep well water instead of spring/rain water. I really enjoy the minerality showing up in the blanco and look forward to trying the reposado.

Not normally a tequila drinker but have shared some with friends in the past. Have a chance to pick up the Ocho Anejo aged in Old Fitz bourbon casks. Just looking for opinions if it is worth it.

We picked up an Amatiteña Añejo recently. Has a great leather flavor to it!

I haven't had that one but I've also never had anything from Ocho that wasn't great.

Scotch guy here exploring tequila this summer. I still have a bottle Don Julio Anejo in my cabinet from years ago. Also, knowing nothing of additives etc. I thought Clase Azul Reposado was excellent when recommended by a bartender for a sipping tequila (again, years ago).

I picked up Lalo and Ocho Reposado as my first bottles after reading this thread. They were great recommendations! Ocho Reposado is easily now my new favorite tequila. I love the peppery finish. Great for sipping, but it also made a very good and interesting margarita. I'll be keeping this one on the shelf as long as it's available. And it makes me wonder if it's even worth looking at the Anejos if I want this nice agave forward flavor.

I plan to keep Lalo as well for my go to margarita mixer. It was much better than the other cheap blancos I've used in the past.

I'd like to try an El Tesero and a G4 next. Also, browsing Total Wine's additive free listings, I can't help but notice Patron keeps showing up. I don't think I've see Patron mentioned in this thread and I don't think I've ever had Patron that wasn't a bachelor party style shot. Any opinions on how it compares to Lalo?

Not a big fan of patron, you are just paying for the name everyone thought was good in college. So many other great teequilas out there. I like Blancos, G4, Mijenta, and Tapatio are what I drink regularly. Wild Common, Don Fulano, and Volans are also really good, and of course Fortaleza if you can find any.

Appreciate you posting that link. I use that site for learning about new tequilas all the time.

In the 80s, I'd be willing to bet that 90% of the tequila consumed in this country was Cuervo Gold or cheaper. At some point in the 90s, there started to be a shift with consumers for higher end tequilas (and rum, vodka, bourbon, etc). This is where you started seeing more consumers purchasing brands like Don Julio, 1800, Tres Generaciones, etc. Sure, they were better than Cuervo, but it's like jumping from Coors Light to Blue Moon. Patron was the tequila that really marketed towards the college age crowd, hence the wild popularity among college age students in the 90s and 2000s. My guess is that Parton is to tequila what Makers Mark is to bourbon, but I don't really drink bourbon, so maybe there is a better example.

Need a rec. not a tequila drinker, but my buddy is. I want to get him a nice bottle for house warming gift. Something off the shelf, that I can get for around $100.

For a house warming gift, I would go with one of the Siete Leguas. ($50-$67)

If you want to spend more, I would probably choose Cascahuin Tahona ($90)

I don't think he knows good tequila. He's happy with Milagro or Patron.

Well if that's the case....Arette Reposado ($30) then buy you something.

Don't spend a $100. Go with G4, Tequila Ocho or Volcan.

Recent favorites, some based on reviews here. Next new bottle I will try is Siete Leguas.

Blano
Mijenta

Reposado
Tequila Ocho

I thought mijenta was pretty good, especially for the price.

I need to give Tequila Ocho another try, it was mid tier for me, but I tried it earlier on when I was getting into tequila.

Nice! I found a blanco at Total Wine last week, was hoping for a reposado too, but they were sold out.

High on my want list but haven't ever seen it in my local Specs or Total Wine.

Buddy picked up the Tequila Ocho anejo on our recent trip and got a chance to try it tonight. Might be one of my new favorite sippers.

I've been impressed by Cimmaron blanco, both as a ranch water mixer and occasional sipper. $23.99.

Cimmaron Blanco and Repo are both mainstays in my cabinet. Use blanco to make ranch waters and repo to make batch margs for parties we host. Best value in all of tequila.

Love the Cimmaron reposado when making cocktails for a crowd. Very underrated.

Also, the Siete Leguas reposado is great. I'd put it on par or above G4, which was my previous favorite.

I was recently at Las Almas Rotas in Dallas and did a high proof tequila flight. I was not a fan in gener of the high proofs, but the Wild Common really stuck out to me. I picked up a bottle of the regular proof Wild Common Blanco and it might the most flavorful Blanco tequila I have had.

If you like agave spirits and live in DFW, Las Almas Rotas is worth the trek to fair park. They have it all and then some.

Pretty proud of their selections, $23 for 3 half ounce pours...better to just get a few buddies and each buy a bottle at specs, you would have 75% of each bottle leftover.

Agreed. It's very pricey.
