Howdy, NO WAY, $1700 prior to wine, that is outside my Christian precepts, that is just TOO MUCH!

We did it and did it big. I would honestly advise against the extended menu as we did it and it was just way too much. Everyone felt miserably full 2/3 through but of course you keep eating everything. I think the regular menus with a supplement or two is the way to go. A friend we were with for a little aggressive with the wine pairing price point (not sure he gave an exact number other than "f us up"). You're wine glass will never get empty and I ended up drinking way too much by the end of the night since I constantly had a full glass. These were our menus

Edit to add: definitely get the kitchen picture, and early reservations aren't a bad thing since the dinner is a multi hour experience. They also give you chocolates after dessert so grab an extra couple to take with you.

The hen egg custard with truffles is one of my favorites. I make that at home from time to time.

All the food was so good it's hard for me to remember favorites at this point, other than the classic oysters and pearls. Wine on the other hand is a different story. That La Croix white burgundy is still a wine of my dreams.

Everything was great but the white truffle macaroni dish and strangely enough the buckwheat ice cream stood out the most to me

I've been twice. The first time was amazing, second time was just ok, but we went right before Covid shut everything down. That may have had something to do with it.

Howdy, just for grins, should we ever get the chance to go (which I doubt) what is the expected tab??? This thread has me wanting to try it, probably a 401k's worth of supper, but looks to be worth it!!!!
You have several options with varying prices.

We selected the least expensive -- the dining room, at $390 per person. Other seating options go up from there; for example, you can dine al fresco in the courtyard for $490 and in a private dining room for $550 a person.

The most expensive option is a black truffle and caviar dinner for $1,200 a person.

Those prices don't include add-ons or wine.

When you book, they charge you for the base price. We made reservations for six, so it was a bit of a scary moment. Hopefully the other couples in our group pay me back.

Everyone has their own definition of what "too expensive" means and to illustrate the point, take a look at their wine and spirits.

I assume there's no 'upcharge' of sorts for a diner that is having beer? Or perhaps someone who didn't drink at all.

Because the beers I would get are $10-$30 per their menu. So I'm spending way less than a wine drinker would, which makes this more affordable for someone like me.

We did a 15 course Michelin star dinner in Barcelona last month, and we certainly loved the service and experience. Each dish was like a work of art. With wine pairings it was like $550 or $600. I really don't know that I could stomach another $1000 for a dinner, but I suppose at some point we likely will.

For guest who don't consume alcohol, at most places like French Laundry there is a cocktail (zero proof) pairing menu that are tailored for each course.

Again, the French Laundry doesn't have preselected drinks for each course. They customize your drinks based on your preferences and budget.

Seems pretty clear you've never been there. Odd that you keep offering advice for a place you've clearly never been.

I saw that he had a severe allergic reaction to something last week. Truly sucks, I loved watching his cooking show on Food Network.

My son has a dairy allergy, too. Thankfully he is extremely careful and knows how to manage it, but it's still scary to think about stuff like this.

Allergic responses are awful and especially in those not knowing of an allergy. The opioid crisis has pushed the FDA to allow Narcan OTC. EpiPens (duo pack as multiple doses required many times) should be standard items in every household.

When I went to Napa a few months ago i couldn't get French Laundry, so I "settled" for Bouchon.

I am grateful now after reading this thread. Especially since i threw down almost $1k (for two) for a omakase in the city already that week.

For those wanting Thomas Keller Bouchon is a good option although it lacks the opulence and presentation I am sure.

Bouchon is my favorite restaurant out there. And I love TFL. Different food and vibe and cost, but overall I put it at the top. I haven't been to Napa in a few years but will likely head back soon and need to give a few new places a look.

I'll be at Bouchon on Sunday. Been close to 5 years since I've been there. Looking forward to it.

I def want to hit french laundry. Years ago on a considerably smaller budget we went to ad hoc and it was excellent.

I've made that fried chicken at home several times. It's delicious. It's also a 3 day process.

I've also made the French onion soup from Bouchon numerous times. Also delicious. And only 7 hours. Only.

I only think to make that fried chicken on Saturday. Which is already 2 days too late.

We always make enough onion soup to freeze some for a later date. So the average time is cut in half.

At my house it doesnt last long enough in the fridge to freeze.

I have been known to keep out a decent forkful of the the rendered onions and put them on a burger later. Thats good eats.

Haha. We've done those onions on burgers, too. Have you done Model Bakery English muffins as the burger buns yet? It's awesome!

Also, the Bouchon Beef Bourguignon is a damn fine meal when it cools off.

We do the fried chicken at home now too. Usually 2 full days if we start early and plan for supper the second day. It's great. I prefer ad hoc since it's protected a bit. Addendum is great for just the chicken but the bees and wasps are aggressive.

I'm back from my trip to Napa and The French Laundry.

We did the non-vegetarian tasting menu with wine pairing. We asked the waiter if a $200 per person budget was sufficient for wine and he said that was fine, so we stuck with it (even though we prepared to go higher if needed).

The best word to describe the experience has to be "amazing."

The 10 courses were perfection and the wine pairings were spot on. The service was second to none; there is an army of folks waiting on your table, removing everything and bringing the next course. After the third or fourth course, we actually asked if we could slow down a bit, because they are so prompt.

The staff is friendly but extremely professional. No over-the-top joking or personal conversations. I asked our waiter if it ever got old seeing people excited to be there, and he smiled and said "never."

The sommelier poured all the wine and explained his choices. We asked him a ton of questions and he graciously answered all of them. We told him he needed to explore some Texas wines and he made a face that cracked us up. He was great.

My favorite dishes were the applewood smoked Wolfe Ranch white quail and the Elysian Fields farm lamb. But everything was excellent, as you would expect.

We had the early seating at 4 p.m. and we weren't finished until about 7:15, so it's an event. We had asked to tour the kitchen if possible so after dinner, a staff member came to the table and took us back. Chef Thomas Keller was working in the kitchen, and he came over, fist bumped us all, and took pictures with the group.

He never said a word, but it was still a memorable end to the evening.

My main tip: Don't eat or drink a lot the day of your visit. We had a very small breakfast and did a 10 a.m. tasting the day of our dinner, and that was it. No lunch or other winery visits. So we were ready for the full experience.

Thanks to everyone on this thread who helped with info. Definitely made a difference.

tl/dr If you get an opportunity to go to The French Laundry, do it. It's definitely worth the money.

During our trip, we also had dinner at The Girl and the Fig in Sonoma, RH in Yountville and Los Agaves in Napa (our casual night), as well as lunch at Farmstead in Saint Helena.

Highly recommend The Girl and the Fig and RH. Farmstead was an okay place for lunch but a bit pricy. We should have picked somewhere else other than Los Agaves for a casual dinner. Food was plain and service was poor.

Always fun to see others takes on the places I've been.

I don't care for the farmstead at all. Been twice and the food is mediocre at best. My wife made a note to not go back.

RH was middling to me but it didn't help that we had a bachelorette group next to us that was annoying. The food was solid but not spectacular.
