Happy New Year Ags!

My last drink was a Russell's Reserve Rye.

Now to a month of liver recovery.

Who's in?

Same. But starting a little late (visiting the in-laws and we head back this weekend, which is when I'm starting).

I made it 4 hours. BBQ requires bourbon, right?

I always do well when I'm trying to lay off until I grill. An old fashioned makes grilling on the back porch twice as fun.

I switched from Bourbon to Wine (I consider this the same as not drinking).

Blue star for you sir.

I'm doing the same although I did not have as clever of a name for it until just now. Hope you don't mind if I steal it.

Go right ahead. I'm pretty sure I heard it somewhere else.

I know I should make my own, but are there any canned mocktails worth trying? My wife has started drinking nonalcoholic beer, but that's not for me.

I've tried a few and most kinda suck, but for example I got a canned margarita mocktail and poured it over ice in a glass rimmed with tajin and added a little lime and agave nectar and it wasn't bad.

I bought my wife a 4 pack of NA Moscow mules from Total Wine and they're not bad. I find ginger beer to be a good go-to with mocktails, so drinks that are ginger beer based are probably decent.

But yeah make your own, they're easy, taste better, and much cheaper.

I know you said you don't like NA beer but try the black butte porter from Deschutes brewery before you give up on beer. It's better than a lot of regular beers. Guinness 0.0 isn't too bad either. I prefer both of those over the athletic beer that gets high ratings.

The St Agrestis Phony Negronis are expensive but good if you like Negronis.

after drinking and eating wayyyy too much over the holiday's I too have decided to try dry January for the first time ever. However, due to a hunting trip I didn't start until this past Sunday. So far so good, but like the other poster mentioned a few posts up it was damn tough last night when I was cooking dinner in the kitchen. Thats my week spot.

I wouldn't be opposed to dropping a few pounds, and at least saving some money on my weekly liquor store runs.

I've done this several times and do it randomly throughout the year too. I find that the first 1-2 nights is easy, followed by 2 nights of a little bit of a struggle, not due to cravings, but just habit of having it to cook or BBQ or whatever. Then it gets easy again. Thats just my observations with myself though.

I think it comes down to what problem you're trying to solve.

We have neural pathways that we reinforce all the time. For me, that looks like this: cooking dinner with a glass or 3 of wine, ordering a Mexican martini when we go out for tex Mex, drinking a few beers while watching a game on TV.

Drinking less certainly doesn't hurt, but I'm still reinforcing those neural pathways.

Someone told me there's 3 areas of concern when it comes to alcohol:

1. Getting withdrawals when you don't have it, shakes, all that stuff, the typical hardcore stuff we associate with alcoholics
2. Use alcohol to mask problems or adversity on a consistent basis (I think there's a difference between drinking in the short term to cope with a specific problem, eg death of someone close, which is not necessarily healthy but maybe understandable if it's just for a short interim, and drinking every time some adversity comes up)
3. Using alcohol habitually, ie "every day after work we go to the bar and have a drink before heading home"

My problem has been #3, certain things are triggers to drink. I tried Dry January in 2023 and Moist January in 2024. Guess which year I drank more in overall?

I'm going all out dry January this year. Also have my annual bloodwork and check-up scheduled for early February, so at least I'll hopefully have a good baseline with the doc. Maybe that's cheating I dunno lol.

I need to cut back…doing better since the holidays but as others said, cooking dinner, BBQing, watching football is super tough. Doesn't help seeing an advertisement damn near every commercial break either
