Lord help me, I love this stuff over the holidays, but I've never made it myself. My offspring and grandchildren are coming for the holidays and I'd like to make a batch. Any favorite recipes?
  • All three cereal varieties are fine
  • "Cheeze Its", Goldfish, or other cheese crackers?
  • Little pretzel sticks, or tiny traditional pretzels?
  • Spanish peanuts, or dry roasted?
  • Seasonings - butter will be on there…..Worcestershire ? Garlic? Zattarain's?
There's lots of variations, amd lots of good Cookson here
Being in TexAgs jail changes a man……..no, not really

I use deluxe mixed nuts or at least mixed nuts and a handful of extra pecans. I like sesame sticks in there too. Some ancho chile and a touch of cinnamon works well in the wet toss (Butter/woo/franks).

I don't use any cheese crackers, but will substitute Gardetto's rye for wheat Chex sometimes.

Snyder's snaps are the correct pretzel choice

The big key is to not follow any guidance on amount of butter and Worcestershire sauce… you need lots of it! The recipes they put on the boxes etc will leave you with dry nearly flavorless "mix".

I wing it while making large batches (~ 2.5 gallon Rubbermaid container used for storage) but I use full pound of butter, bit less that half large bottle of Worcestershire sauce, Cajun seasoning, extra garlic and onion powder, black pepper and sometimes a bit more cayenne. Rice, corn, wheat Chex, Cheerios, pretzel sticks broke in half, I like to throw some crispix in there as well. Nuts optional. When you mix it all up, make sure everything is nice and coated.

Bake one hour at 250 stirring every 15 minutes. Pour onto couple layers of paper towels on counter to cool off (but be sure to grab yourself a bowl while hot). At this point I usually taste again for salt level and adjust as needed while it is spread out cooling/before placing in container. It's pretty hard to mess up.

All three Chex
multigrain cherrios or apple jacks
unsalted deluxe mixed nuts (buy the big bag from Costco)
additional peanuts
pretzel sticks broken in half
larger honey wheat pretzel twists/sticks broken into thirds
rye chips, or in years past I've been substituting these bagel chips broken into 1/4s - I hold them aside to add after I've already butter/seasoned everything otherwise they would just soak up all the butter mix

For my Chex mix I use butter & Worcestershire sauce plus: seasoned salt, garlic & onion powder, smoked paprika, habanero pepper and a few dashes of Tabasco. For more of Gardetto's mix for my yankee wife, I cut back on W-shire, omit pepper and Tabasco and add mustard powder and a large portion of HV Ranch seasoning.

This is what goes into mine:

  • Corn, Rice, and Wheat Chex
  • Pretzels-Snyder's snap or garlic parm Dots
  • Deluxe mixed nuts
  • Rye chips-Gardettos sells a 14oz bag of just rye chips
  • Plain bagel chips broken into pieces
  • Regular Goldfish
For the seasoning recipe I use:

  • 2 sticks of butter, melted and hot
  • 2/3 cup worcestershire sauce
  • 3 Tablespoons seasoned salt
  • 2 teaspoon garlic powder
I typically use half a box of chex cereal, bag of gold fish, bag each of bagel and rye chips, about half bag of pretzels, and just eyeball the mixed nuts. It makes a lot of chex mix at once and I have several pans of it baking at the same time but it ends up being pretty good and flavorful.

My Aunt's recipe was based on the box recipe, but she added Cheerios and Kix. I prefer without crackers or bagel chips etc, and like pretzel sticks. For spicy mixes, add Franks Red Hot sauce or other hot sauce, Paprika, Chilli powder etc.

For a sweet version, sub chocolate chex, peanut butter cereals etc. Most have butter/melted chocolate/melted peanut butter pour over, then some powdered sugar to coat. Awesome!

Among the various usual suspects I've found they sell mini Club Crackers, which I find really soak up the butter Worcestershire mixture well.

Bagel chips are also a great pick.

Some GF options to add to rice & corn Chex (plus pecans, because we are Texans after all)

All three Chex mixes, light on wheat

Cheezits and add Bugels, if you find another snack cracker you want put it in there.

Add Dots pretzel sticks as your pretzels

Spanish Peanuts

Use this as a base…use more if adding things.

1 stick (to 1 1/2 Sticks) Butter)

3 Tbsp. Worcestershire Sauce

6 dashes (to 12 Dashes) Tabasco Sauce

3 cloves (to 5) Garlic, Mashed

1 tsp. Lawry's Seasoned Salt

1/4 tsp. Onion Powder

Thank me later…

The biggest problem I'm running into now is how much mix I am making. Its now so much I think I need to add an additional rack in the oven in order to dry it all and I don't have any single mixing bowl big enough.

I use one large roasting pan for my 2.5 gallon batches… the wet mix is 3+ inches thick. Mixing every 15 minutes for an hour does the job just fine. It will crisp up more as it cools but my family will fight over the few chewy ones that soak up a lot of the juice (typically the wheat).

wonder what adding just a lil brown sugar to each of those savory recipes would taste like.... I am intrigued. I havent made that stuff since my abuela died 25yrs ago

Y'all gave me the itch to try this, and I used much more butter and Worcestershire than I might have.

Corn Chex
Rice Chex (they were outta wheat)
Peanuts
Pretzel sticks
Goldfish
Cheezits
Bagel crisps
HEB Cheetos
Tony Chacher's
Cowboy Spice Co It's So Gooda

Came out good and we are the 5hit out of it
