Texas A&M basketball to face Texas in exhibition game for Harvey relief

Pending clearance from the NCAA, the Texas A&M basketball program will face the Texas Longhorns in an impromptu exhibition game to benefit Hurricane Harvey relief efforts next Wednesday, October 25 in Houston. The game is expected to be cleared today and an official announcement should follow.

The Aggies and Longhorns will tip off at 7:00 pm at Tudor Fieldhouse on the campus of Rice University. Tickets will be on sale soon, and all proceeds will be directed to help Texans impacted by the devastating Category 4 storm.

Longtime rivals, A&M and Texas quit playing yearly when Texas A&M left the Big 12 to join the Southeastern Conference in 2012. They played an early season contest on November 25, 2015 in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas, with the Aggies winning 84-73. SEC media this week projected Texas A&M to finish third in the conference with Robert Williams tabbed as the co-player of the year. Big 12 coaches predicted Texas will finish fourth in that league.

This game will be a good test of the progress Billy Kennedy's team has made in preparing for the upcoming season. It's virtually all upside for the team, as the new roster additions will get an early taste of high major competition before the season officially begins.

Fans of both schools have strong opinions about whether the Aggies and Longhorns should play one another, but an exhibition match to benefit Harvey relief offers the players and fans a chance to enjoy a true rivalry game for an important cause.

This also gives Aggie fans a chance to see a tough early season matchup close to home. Though A&M is slated to face West Virginia, Oklahoma State and either Pitt or Penn State, USC and Arizona in the first month of the season, those games are in Germany, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

Texas A&M has provided ticket information for the event:

ALL proceeds will go directly to the Rebuild Texas Relief Fund (https://www.rebuildtx.org). Tickets will go on sale Sunday (Oct. 22) at 5 p.m. Central and will be available for purchase via TicketMaster online at www.TicketMaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000. The seating capacity for Tudor Fieldhouse is 5,208.
  • Courtside seats: $1,000
  • Lower Bowl seating (including mezzanine level): $150
  • Upper Side seating: $35
  • Upper End Zone seating: $20

I hear what you're saying but I doubt it will count since it's an exhibition. If it doesn't count as one of the 6 I hope they let him play. More game experience is better.
I want JJ to play as well.

I'd be shocked if this can go to the suspension as a non-scheduled game...but then it's an internal suspension, so who knows.
It should either count towards the suspension or he should be allowed to play.
If we don't see Caldwell play at all in this game on Wed. then it seems a decent assumption that they decided to count it towards the suspension. If he plays, then of course they didn't.
I dont think it's a decent assumption that they counted it towards the suspension. Our admin is stupid about this sort of thing

Well, as I said, if he doesn't play at all in the game on Wednesday, not even a little bit, then I would obviously lean towards thinking they maybe counted it towards his punishment. He is practicing with the team and aint injured. And he is from Houston and I'm sure would be squirming in his seat wanting to play in this one.

I'm kind of neutral on whatever they do. I think this team will be able to beat Pitt/Penn State regardless, and part of me would like to get an early peek this week of what this kid looks like versus some good competition.

Logan claimed in a thread on Premium that he wasn't going to play and it doesn't count against his suspension. It sucks but it is what it is...

Why wouldn't he play if it doesn't count towards the suspension?

I want to beat West Virginia and right now we need to use the Texas game as a legit practice towards that end.

Don't know the exact reasoning, just the messenger. Logan said it's a student affairs thing.

figured this would happen. sounds like BK is the one who is benching him. my guess is they arent taking this game seriously like 99% of both fanbases will, and would rather establish cohesion and depth with players that will be available for the start of the season.

See if you can find Logan's comment on premium. That runs contrary to my takeaway

I thought the suspension was originally due to a violation with the athletics department not necessarily Coach Kennedy's policy. Coach BK is simply complying with the suspension handed down by the athletic department. At least that's how I understood it.

Has there been any news regarding TV coverage for this? I would imagine that even if it were PPV, there would be quite a bit of interest.

We can't sell enough seats for a real game. Opposite the WS, prices as high as they are I'm not sure what they were expecting.

Wouldn't announcing a tv broadcast make it harder to sell tickets at such a high price? Some may be holding out for that question to be answered.

They're supposedly considering dropping ticket prices soon, if you're still on the fence about attending

they should if they want more butts on seats.

Agree. The market obviously doesn't support those prices, but it's a fundraiser so you need to charge more if you're going to make any money off it. Maybe they'll drop the prices and ask for additional donations.

The easiest would be to make tshirts commemorating the event.

People with money might be in L.A. or spent $ on MMPark tickets

Both schools have played in Houston many times over the years. They should know that there are real college basketball fans among the alumni here, but not very many.

I paid what I was willing to pay and happy to do it, but I am sure that many of the people who might have decided to come took a look at the ticket price and decided that watching the World Series for free was a better deal.

When they announced this exhibition, the Houston Astros were down 3-2 to the Yankees in the series, having lost 3 straight in New York. So the city of Houston having special interest in the WS late last week was a possibility but by no means a certainty. Just the way the ball bounced, and great for the city of Houston to have the Astros to cheer for after being so hard hit by Harvey.

I wonder if they'll announce something at the last minute if you donate some money. That's what Kansas and Missouri did. They both said there would be no TV until the night before and then they announced for 40 bucks you could stream it.

They made $640,000 on the stream, 16,000 signups. They filled the arena.

Based on the rush for tickets, not sure the stream draws a lot of interest, and surely not at an amount that causes a donation bucket to overflow.

For that game, you had a blue blood basketball school in Kansas (where football season is just something to suffer through until hoops season starts) vs. another school Missouri who also has a large and passionate basketball fanbase who finally have renewed basketball enthusiasm/excitement with the Top-3 projected NBA draft pick Michael Porter Jr. and friends.

No surprise that KU and Mizzou fans would be selling out the venue and paying whatever prices were asked.
