Get your lady or gentleman out to Reed Arena or grab some popcorn and get comfy on the couch next to your loved one because Texas A&M men's basketball, the number 8 team in the country, faces off against Georgia tomorrow night.
Now that football is over with, the world is focused on college basketball and the greatest sporting weekend ever assembled, that is March Madness. The words brackets, March, Cinderella, upsets, Kenpom, bubble, NET rankings, and yes even the words Lunardi are all thrown around this time of year. The words Aggie and bubble watch are not synonymous like in years past. Instead, now we are fighting for the highest seed possible. With only 8 games left in conference play (5 at home), Texas A&M is currently 18-5 and 7-3 in conference play. Most brackets have us a 3 with a good amount even projecting us as a 2. Don't worry you downers, movements is hard to come by this late in the year when you have a strong resume with road wins, neutral site wins, and strength of schedule.
As all of us fans look ahead, Buzz and Co. better keep their eyes on Georgia coming into town. They are by all accounts still a tournament team and they may have been blessed and cursed with the toughest conference schedule in the country. They will have had road games against Auburn, Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee, and now us, getting Bama and Florida twice. They do have some solid wins, including one against St John's and Kentucky. Their NET is 34, this will not be an easy win for us.
They are led by potential all freshman player of the year and lottery pick in big man #14 Asa Newell. The 6'11 forward averages 15.3 ppg and 6.8 rpg. He like the rest of the team, like to their scoring near the rim. Our big men, Payne, Coleman, Solo, and Garcia will have their hands full with a big sized and athletic Georgia front court. Newell and their other starting big #10 RJ Godfrey shoot 55% and 54% from the field. Their 3rd big man, 6'11 #6 Smoot Cyril is one of the SEC's leading blockers. So defending the paint and securing defensive rebounds will be pivotal.
Georgia is a solid rebounding team with their height, so we must keep our bigs out of foul trouble. Georgia loves getting to the line. They aren't lethal from 3 and love to run a lot of pick and roll action or run their offense inside our through Newell. So speaking of romance, this game will be far from sexy. Expect a physical scrappy free throw shooting game. So making ours will be important. We'll also need to knock down some threes to space the floor and give us a better chance at some offensive rebounds. I expect Wade to be shooting early on and often.
