Former Texas A&M point guard Brian Barone is coaching Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship, up 55-40 with 7:13 to go. This would be SIUE's first ever NCAA tournament appearance.

as a kid who grew up in tulsa and went to many a tulsa vs Creighton missouri valley game basketball game i will always have a soft spot for the tony barone family. it was fun to watch him coach and would be awesome if son could have a great coaching career too.

Brian framed some scissors and hung them up at the door to the locker room when he got the job 6 years ago, and is now going to use them to cut down the nets.

he also framed a hammer next to it to break into the glass for the scissors, and is currently trying to figure out how to get to the hammer

Good dude. I remember playing some 1 on 1 and shooting around with him during his Dads summer basketball camp at A&M in the late 90's. He Loved to Hustle when he was out on the floor that's for sure!

Does he have any sons who aren't very good at basketball that he will place on our team when he coaches us?

I was so co fused trying to figure out the analogy until I saw the clip of him talk in about it. Still sleepy I guess.

He was the best player on his dad's last team, right? So, um, yeah...

He is actually on the all-time single season assist list, which is pretty amazing when you consider who he was passing to.

Not even close to the best, even on that awful team

I honestly cannot remember a single player from that team other than Barone, even though I was in school at the time. Didn't we have some immobile Spanish guy at center? Or was that one of Melvin's teams?

Exactly...although admittedly you could have knocked me over with a feather when I saw Jones averaged 18PPG that year

That team went 1-15 in conference, almost as impressive as Melvin going 0-16 in 2003 with Antoine Wright and Acie Law.

I've gotten a lot of grief for posting this but he didn't stand out even a little bit playing at the REC and not because of his size and complexion. He was a decent college player but in a pickup game there were many guys out there you'd rather on your team than him. Sorry for the reality.

I used to hoop with him all the time at the Rec.

I always thought he would make a great coach.

He was limited in size, speed, athleticism but his basketball feel and effort were unmatched.

Very happy for him and I hope they can make some noise in the tourney!

As a resident of College Station in the 80s and 90s, I can tell you that I saw and played with lots of coach's kids. The two that never tried to name drop their dad or act like jerks were Brian Barone and Troy Walters. They both were humble, hard working and it's no surprise that both are successful coaches today. FYI, the worst was the son of a coach in the Jackie era whose dad went on to win many super bowls in Dallas. That kid told anyone who would listen how his family was too good for this town and no one was sad when they split town. Tony was an awful coach at A&M but every interaction I had with him, he couldn't have been nicer. Proud of Brian for fighting through some personal struggles and that he's earned all the success he's achieved.

Always love it when some dude who was the 9th man at Conroe Oak Ridge or wherever, and never sniffed collegiate ball, calls a guy a scrub. You're right, you probably would have taken that 1998 A&M team to the final four.

Probably could have exchanged him with Wojo or Diarra. Not sure what that means, but it would at least seem to make good coaching material.

In 1998 I would pick method over barone for a pick up game. In fact I probably did many times. Method was a way better shooter.
