SEC Buzz = Big 12 Turgeon….both got us to tourneys but couldn't get past the rd of 32. This is basically our ceiling till we demand for higher expectations from our athletic department.
Excellent and concise overview. Everybody is disappointed we didn't go further this year, but it doesn't diminish the other very good things Buzz has done that no other coach has done at A&M in it's history.Fanatic15...Drs2B! said:
Let's do a comparison of the "modern era" Aggie Coaches over their best 4 season stretch. The "COVID-19 Years" of 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 are not part of my calculus - as other Aggie Men's Basketball Coaches did not have to deal with what I hope will be a once in a lifetime atypical phenomenon.
Buzz - the last 4 years, 2021-2025 - 96 total wins. 6 post season wins (4 in 2022 NIT and 2 wins in three NCAAT appearances). Has won more games against "ranked teams" (top 25 when we played them) and "highly ranked teams" (top 10 when we played them) than all other "modern era" Aggie Men's Basketball Coaches combined - which also includes beating the #1 ranked team this oast season - something never accomplished by any other Aggie Men's Basketball Coach.
Kennedy - Best 4 year stretch between 2011 and 2019 was 2014-2018 (other 4 years were horrendous - with no pandemic excuse) with 87 total wins in that time period. 4 post-season wins in his only two post-season appearances, both NCAAT appearances (and both times getting to Sweet Sixteen).
Turgeon - Was here for 4 years from 2007-2011 with 97 total wins. 4 post-season appearances - all in the NCAAT- resulting in 3 wins, though never advancing past the round of 32.
Gillespie - *(I will put him in here even though he abandoned us and went to Kentucky after only 3 years)
Won 70 games total in 3 years - with 3 post-season appearances - winning 5 games (2 wins in NIT and 3 wins in two NCAAT appearances- reaching the Sweet Sixteen his final year). He clearly resurrected Aggie Basketball.
I would contend Buzz is the best of all of the coaches in the "modern era" based on BOTH the overall success and accomplishment of his teams here combined with how well he has developed the young men who played for him at Texas A&M.
Of course, I wish this team would've advanced in this year's NCAAT into next weekend - as I think we mightve been able to get even further, having already beaten Auburn once. But I still enjoyed this season and REALLY enjoyed THIS Team as much as any Aggie Team I've followed in the last 20 years!
I hope Buzz stays in College Station until he retires from coaching!
BTHO the Transfer Portal this off-season to put together a "surprisingly" successful team for the 2025-2026 season!
Gig'em Aggies!!!
Thanks for the reminder that the majority of the posters on here know jack-squat about basketball and the most experience they have is upwards basketball.zooguy96 said:
It seems like we ran a more complex offense on the middle school upwards basketball team that I coached.
It seems like all we tried to do was jack up a bunch of three-point shots to miss to get the offensive rebound. Why not run an actual offense that sets up easy looks?

For those wanting the admin to look elsewhere, what faith do you have they will find someone better than Buzz? Which recent hire in a major sport do we have a coach where you would say that the people doing the hiring know anything?

Give me the Turd back, I was wrong about him, BK we will never know because of his illness

If he stays, Buzz HAS to hire someone who can coach offense, and maybe a recruiter too

Counting NIT wins as true "postseason wins" is wild

I'm assuming if he stays he won't change one damn thing.

The issue is we know his ceiling. 2nd round loss.
With 8 seniors, it ain't getting any better than this IMHO.

Dude - his ceiling is what he has done in the past at other programs. Multiple Sweet Sixteen appearances and I think at least one Elite Eight.
And, as I've pointed out in other posts, he is arguably the best Men's Basketball coach we have had at Texas A&M.
