I don't know if we have the money to get what we need in the portal. We were behind in basketball and I think seeing what football has done and what baseball is going this year, people that matter are probably rethinking do they want to continue to give what they have to NIL. It's not producing results
This is going be interesting to watch. Everyone says NIL is what matters most. But how far can we go until there's no point in throwing away money. Baseball is a great example, it's a total waste.
This is the part of NIL that I think is coming home to roost very soon. When it was new and novel, donors and such were willing to put up some big money to try and buy a title in short order. And they weren't paying market value, and not getting any ROI either in titles or what the 'intention' was, in business returns. Those guys didn't get rich enough to put up that kind of money by pissing it away. How long will they continue to pony up for what we are putting out there?
In its purest form, NIL was supposed to be essentially players getting endorsement deals like pros. If I own Gillette razors and I pay Tom Brady $10M a year to be in commercials using my razors, but I don't sell more razors, I'm not going to keep paying Tom Brady that money. I'm not paying him to play for the Pats or Bucs or whatever team was my team du jour. right now NIL is all about getting the kid to the school, with no intention of getting anything back but wins. If the wins don't come, AND my business isn't helped, you get what, 2-3 years? Maybe 5 years of me sinking money into something I get nothing for before I stop? I would even think in some cases NIL hurts some of these businesses because it's just an ugly side of college sports that people (myself being one) don't want to proliferate. And I need XYZ product and there are two options to get it and one is one of the gross NIL businesses, I'm probably going to option B instead.
