Was at Xavier and did very well. At this point it wouldn't be a terrible hire.. it's not beard or macsland.. but I think better than Hoiberg or others.
Former head coach at Louisville and Xavier, now at College of Charleston. Personally I would prefer a coach whose trajectory was going the other way…

I agree. His former assistant Pat Kelsey is better than Mack. I would rather take a chance on Huss or Murray than this.
Made the dance 8 out of his 9 years at Xavier, but then kinda ran Louisville into the ground. Wouldn't be an awful hire but certainly not a home run...I don't know how many home runs are out there though.

This would be a just ok hire.
Louisville is the anomaly. The way Pitino departed and the lack of roster retention put him in a bad spot.
First year he took Louisville to the tourney, which is something they failed to do the year before. Second year he was 15-5 in conference (2nd in the ACC) when COVID hit. Then he had two post COVID seasons where UL fired him. I have a hard time faulting coach too much for the post COVID mediocrity, although it does raise questions on how he would handle the NIL era.
Has been good at CoC, but it's his first year taking over a tourney team that won the conference, and they took a step back from that admittedly high peak.
Biggest unknown is how he recruits and handles the NIL era.

I would have some questions for him about the Louisville ending and having not really operated at this level in the NIL era, but the guy can coach basketball. I think we could do worse.

This is how you get a good coach on the rebound to prove himself again, like a pearl or a Sampson or a beard etc…
Not saying he's been as successful as those guys, but it's similar in that they were all at big programs and got let go because of scandal which makes them very obtainable and hungry
I think Mack is a guy you'd know pretty quickly if it is going to work or not. If he's still got "it" it will come together quickly and he can build this thing fast. If he lost his fastball, you'll see it in the year 2 roster.
Just as a clarification the OP does not specifically say that he's flying to College Station. The info could be correct but they could be meeting somewhere else which isn't nearly to the level of "this is all but done" like it would be if he was flying here.
