Bucky Ball! What a feeling it was to watch Bucky Ball in action on Monday night! Relentless effort, selfless passing, sharp shooting from downtown, full court press. Aggies were in for a treat Monday night and it continues on Thursday night against Texas Southern. Texas Southern got walloped in their season debut by 55 to Gonzaga. Now they get to face 40 minutes of relentless full speed Aggie basketball.
The story is not the opponent, but how we are playing. A system like ours takes time and reps. Please remember folks, this is a roster that was thrown together weeks after the portal opened. Our press will be exposed at times, our lack of chemistry will be tested, our 3's may not fall, however this team will be going full speed and full of heart. Bucky has them playing hard for one another and for Texas A&M. I loved the effort in game 1. Passing was exceptional and so selfless. We often looked for a great shot and kept that ball moving. Bucky Ball is here, buckle in.
On Monday, we saw so much ball movement that the 12th Man may have thought wasn't possible. We saw 98 points, 11 three's, 22 assists, just under 50%. Dominguez highlighted the day with 18 points, making 4 three's and getting fouled on another. 4 other Aggies posted double digits in Josh Holloway, Rylan Griffen, Rashaun Agee, and Jacari Lane. 7 other Aggies scored a basket. The offense was up tempo, but hardly settled for bad shots. The ball was always moving or cutting to the rim. Northwestern State crowded the paint forcing us to shoot and we made them pay. In fact, Bucky said they didn't shoot enough three's. Bucky wants a 50/50 split on three's to attempts.
However, we also looked great getting to the basket. Agee was a monster in the paint, Federiko will always get on the stat sheet with a put back or easy finish. It was the wings such as Holloway, Griffen, or Ali Dibba who showed poise and finesse getting to the paint. This will help open up our offense a lot more. We're going to rely on an inside out attack as well to open the 3. We'll need this balance to help our offense run at a high level. Spacing looked great and the ball could reverse sides quickly. Pop Issacs was a game time decision, and even with limited practice he looked solid. I think he'll solidify himself as our best distributor the more timing he gets with our guys.
Defensively, we all got a taste of Bucky Ball's press and trap defense. As expected, it did have its holes and schematically we did break down at times. However, the pressure put on NW State was visible and relentless. We had 13 steals on the night and forced them into 16 turnovers. They did shoot just under 40% from the field and had plenty of wide open shots. This style of defense will only get better with time, lane integrity, when to trap, when to fall back, all that only gets better with in game situations. Aside from Holloway, this is a new system to everyone and it's unique. We're going to break opponents down and frustrate them into errant passes and many turnovers, but with that we will bend at times and the press may be broken. NW State was able to heave some passes down the court to wide open players near the basket getting behind our press. However, due to our quick nature we can score quickly and erase mistakes. We just can't let those mistakes consume us.
Texas Southern should be another opportunity, an even easier one for us to work on things and play a lot of guys. I'd love to see a shakeup in rotations. Let's see who pairs well with who defensively, let's see who runs the court together better, there will be lot's to take from this game. I wanna see more people at the game and I wanna see 115 points!
